I get what you're saying there.

If you send the kiddo down the road to Westbury Christian, I would imagine they'll have a better shot at the top quarter/10%.

So you are saying a public school is more competitive than a private school with kids who have parents who are high enough earners to send their kids to private school? Wouldn't the average rich kid be smarter than your average public school kid?

Also, what is stressful about the lottery? Do you apply once and if you don't get your choice of school your kid is stuck at your crappy zoned school for good? Is it one and done or can you apply for the lottery every year?

Not what I'm saying at all, just saying that Bellaire is extremely difficult (just talking about Bellaire). Not sure about other schools...

Never done the lottery, so can't add anything to that.

I have family zoned to Love but did the lottery program to get into Field. It was stressful, pretty sure they just ended up going in person to get in. Their second is a couple years from kinder so kind of starting to stress about it again.

We moved to be zoned to OFE so we wouldn't have to worry about it, until middle school at least....
Is Field magnet now? 4 years ago it was out backup as they had space available but not magnet program and we would have been fine with our kids there. Only downside for us was the location.

My coworkers here in Katy don't like how competitive 7 Lakes is and kids w/ comparable GPA to my daughter in Alvin are in the bottom 1/3 at 7 Lakes while my daughter is top 20%. I guess having involved parents that are high earners usually leads to better grades as the other kids are too poor to pay attention.

You pick up to 10 schools and are given priority randomly and it takes several months to work your way down as kids select other schools. We were very high for all of our selections but went from over 30 to having a spot at Harvard quickly just before the deadline.

Back when I was in a Katy ISD HS I remember a few kids switching over to private school after the first set of class rankings came out so that they could have a better chance at being in a higher percentile. There also were a fair amount who thought they should be starters on the varsity baseball team that went to private schools to get playing time.

There are definitely some public schools in the Houston area where getting to the top X% is far more difficult than your average private school.

Some public schools have Tiger mom parents and (let's be real) 1st or 2nd gen Asian kids who will outwork anyone on academics. All they do is study.

Private schools are more consistent on academic performance all the way down but kids have lots of college options so you don't have the extreme pressure that you do at some public schools.

Private school kids don't need to go to UT or A&M, their parents can afford to send them to good private colleges or good out of state colleges nationwide. Very different dynamic.

That's the problem at Bellaire. Lots of kids, all they care about are grades. My daughter isn't one of them. All she cares about is partying and soccer. And I'm ok with that.

I have kids at Harvard, Hogg MS and Heights HS. Generally positive experience so far, and more and more local families are choosing these schools over private each year. Certainly beats paying $60k a year in tuition.

That seven lakes number is wild. TAMS is at UNT in Denton so not sure it belongs on this list.

Don't disagree with any of this.

Would still make a lot more sense to magnet into a less competitive public school than pay big $'s for a crappy private school.

I knew folks that did this year's ago. I'm sure it's still a thing.

Having said that, it is 6X the size of SJS upper school, so St John's is easily #1 per capita.

YMMV but I think for most parents the downside of their kids being at a bad school and hanging out with the "wrong peer group" FAR outweighs the benefits of an easier path to top 10%.

We are zoned to Waltrip. I wonder how much the Pena and Ertman murders hastened the white flight from the area zoned to the school back in the early 90s.

that's why you wait until the last year to move them over. Less chance of contamination.

In any case, these are all dumb ideas. Just trying to pick the dumb and cheap idea.

I don't think it's a realistic scenario though.

Why would anyone pay big $'s for a crappy private school? Presumably if you're going private, you're picking that school for a positive reason. If not you, just hate money.

So if the option is "crappy private school" or "crappy public school" it seems the only real option should be to move where you get access to a good private or public school.

My two cents. My son did the dual-language (Spanish/English) program at Mark Twain Elementary. We loved the school and the program. Have kept up with it through some neighbors. Twain is still fantastic.

We went with St. John's for middle school and high school. My son is in his first year of college now and finds college much easier than SJS. He feels the hard-core emphasis on writing that was so stressful in high school is paying off now. I think the investment in SJS paid off for us academically...not sure if other private schools are as crazy rigorous (they may be). If so, I think private is worth the money.

They are not.

The closest thing would be IB programs at other schools. After going through IB I was shocked at how easy AP HS classes were. A&M was also extremely easy.

IB is just a different level of rigor compared to AP or your typical American undergrad experience (other than engineering and STEM).

We have a 3rd and 1st grader at Sinclair and we have been very happy with it so far. Our kids' teachers have been great every year. We are actively involved in PTO and volunteer to help out at the school as much as we can. There is a lot of parent support which makes a big difference. We plan to go to Black Middle School but can't commit to Waltrip unless it changes drastically.

All of this changes though if we start to see a teacher exodus from Sinclair due to the new HISD policies and procedures.

this is a huge difference maker. The PTO can fill in a lot of the budget gaps that the schools have.

Sadly, I think parents get less involved/active as the kids move onto middle school and high school (unless there's a great football program of course).

Our school also has a separate "Foundation" that raises a bunch of money independently of the school and PTO. It's a huge help.

We've done it all..

I got a big family and we've moved around a lot.

HISD - I think it really depends on the schools you get into via the lottery or the one you're zoned to....

We were in the Meyerland area and at one point zoned to Lovett Elem - which was goodish. The previous house we were zoned to McNamara Elem which was terrible...zero families in the neighborhood sent their kids there despite the school being in the neighborhood.

10 years ago when we lived in that area Bellaire high was thought of as good. Sharpstown or Westbury are bad.

The burbs is a different kettle of fish. Certain high schools seem to draw a lot of...how can I put this....children of tiger moms. So, if you look at the Valedictorian and Sal, in Katy ISD virtually every single one of them is the child of a tiger mom. Hyper competitive. The type of thing where a huge swath of kids have zero social life and will spend hours doing 'extra credit' when they already have an A+. Its insane.

So, we didn't like that either.

Now we're in Fulshear HS which is like Katy - light. Maybe not as 'good' on paper but good enough and not nearly as ridiculously 'competitive.'

I want my kids to have a balanced life and experience so Seven Lakes is a hard pass just as much as Sharpstown....

And in some cases you have schools sitting in a neighborhood where none of the students who live across the street will attend whatsoever cause the school mixes in with tons of folks coming from apartment complexes which skews demographics

This partly describes my neighborhood. There are 4 elementary schools in the "super neighborhood" and they all look nothing like the neighborhood. The schools average out to 49% black, 35% hispanic, and 7.5% white. The neighborhood is 24% black, 20% hispanic, and 47% white. I'm obviously excluding the "other" ethnic categories for simplicity's sake. The schools also average 83% free/reduced lunch kids while the median income in the neighborhood is well above the numbers to qualify for that. From what I can tell from school signs in yards and talking with neighbors, folks in my hood either do private, homeschool, or move to Spring Branch ISD when it's time to put the kids in school. The only people who look to be sending the kids to HISD are the folks in apartments.
yep - where I live there's an elementary school smack dab in the middle of the area and 2 private schools

for the few kids that walk - I see all walking to the private schools in the morning which is away from the center of the community and none walking towards the school - for the sc hool signs in the yard - I see everywhere in the city except the local school lol

now the apartments on the other side of the street, they are trucking them in there with no problems

another issue in my opinion the state has allowed too many charter schools to stick their campuses on hisd territory

Pound for pound the St John's number is the craziest. That's roughly 20% of students per grade achieving national merit scholar.

I cant speak for all private high schools, but i know for a fact the private hs both of my sons gradated from would not publish any class rankings.

This is a huge disadvantage in relation to admission considerations into State universities in Tx. A student's admission is pretty much determined on his/her test score.

Bellaire is a wonderful public school option especially in HISD. That is where the boys would of attended if we chose public public school.

HISD is terrible. I mean, some kids survive it okay. There are some decent elementary schools. But middle school and high school are problematic. We had kids in both public and private and the education received was not close.
