Wife has a dr appt on Fannin near the zoo at 4:00 tomorrow (Thursday). It's just an initial consult. I'm guessing we'll be out around 4:45 only because drs never call you back on time.

We generally eat early so going straight to eat is an option before driving back to Louisiana.

Should we eat in that area abd let afternoon traffic die down? If so, recommendations?

Or should we try to get in 10-E out of town as soon as possible and eat in Beaumont somewhere? Recs in Bmt won't be frowned upon either.

Thanks & Gig'em

Also, no Cajun or seafood. We have that covered at home.

Mexican & BBQ or steak etc. The stuff Texas is known for.

There's not a ton around that area restaurant wise. Obviously traffic will be horrendous so if it were me, I'd take the local streets to eat in downtown or east downtown. For Tex Mex, original Ninfa's on Navigation would fit the bill and allow you to easily hop on I-10 east after you are done.

At that time the big question is how much do you want to eat in Houston or elsewhere? Since I assume you're not going to kill a couple of hours it's all about managing hunger.

Either get on the road and try to make some headway traffic wise or get a good meal and be satisfied sitting in traffic there's no need to be in a hurry for.

This is assuming you're going to spend about an hourish traveling to and eating wherever. Traffic between 4:30 and 7:00 generally sucks again like COVID never happened.

In that part of town for BBQ I'd hit The Pit Room on Richmond.

Candente on Richmond near The Pit Room. It's a Tex Mex joint owned by the owners of The Pit Room. It's not cheap but you'd be hard pressed to find better Tex Mex. The Tampiquena is an outstanding dish.

Plenty of places in Rice Village or on Kirby.

You won't be out by 4:45pm.

Great suggestions. I'll keep yall posted. I know you're all emotionally invested at this point

and I'm from Louisiana. Any TexMex in Houston will be amazing. The same that any gumbo or boudin in Texas will be ass. (Except Hebert's that used to be by Taco Bell on University. May he rest in peace. That guy used to get piss drunk in that little shack on Mardi Gras)

Didn't realize they had one that way now also. Have to say, I'm a fan of Goode Co Taqueria.

But have to disagree that Ninfa's is ass. Don't venture into EaDo, but anytime we do we stop there. For example, when we bought my son a new mattress at Texas Mattress Makers a few weeks ago. I work a block away from the one in the galleria area, don't go often cause of price but it's a normal happy hour spot or good to meet suppliers.

Back to to the OP, rush hour on Friday's seems to run from like 2 - 7 pm. So good luck and pack your patience.

Go to Ninfa's on Navigation and get the Tacos A La Ninfa. I don't understand how anyone with working taste buds can eat that and think it's ass.

Texas Mattress Makers over in McKinney?

That place is open? It always looked like an abandoned building to me.

Go south to the loop. Take the loop east to 225. Take 225 across the Fred Hartman and go right onto 99, if you have a toll tag. Take 99 to 10. Go east. Next exit is Eagle something. Exit and go north. Craft 96 is by the HEB and it is great. Not TexMex, but great food and beer. There is a texmex spot right there that gets good reviews, but I haven't been. Casa Julia.
This route should keep you out of most major traffic spots.

yeah, if you want wide selection of choices Rice Village area has Navy Blue, or Eau Tour or Hamsa or Helen Greek or Roma or El Meson or Cafe Rabelais...

If you are set on Tex-Mex then Ninfa's on Navigation and Candente on Richmond are my two favorites, can't go wrong IMO.

Came here to say this. Don't fall for the Ninfas on Nav trap as it's expensive AND mediocre, cant be both but they get by on their name.

Candentes has some bbq flavors as I think they use some smoked meats from the sister restaurant in the food.

His family now has a Herbert's Food truck in Coldspring every Saturday serving BBQ and Cajun. They have a Facebook page. I'm picking up some brisket and gumbo Saturday.

I also vote for Original Ninfa's on Navigation. Easy to get to and easy I-10 access.

Good luck.

They do. They use the Pit Room brisket in the queso, brisket nachos, and brisket enchiladas.

Interesting. May go check that out on one of my rambles. Been meaning to check out a Saturday bluegrass jam in Coldspring.

If you decide to head east first, eat at Casa Julia in Mont Belvieu. Beef fajitas are fantastic.

False alarm. We got to the Dr at 3 (an hour early) and they took us as soon as we walked in. Out by 3:30. So we got out of dodge before traffic set in.

It'd be nice if the doctor would agree to do telephone video appointments to curb such long drives.
