The 30-plus year postal worker said the problem is with a key piece of equipment -- a new parcel sorting machine that was set to be installed during peak season, just before the holidays.

"Supposed to be a massive machine," the employee said.

So big, he said they had to remove two other machines, but the big issue was that the new machine didn't fit inside the facility.

The employee said without any large sorting machines, mail is piling up everywhere.

"It's a whole mess," the employee said. "Every open space, aside from the hallways, has mail or trash sitting there."

SIAP but did not see any discussion of this on the front page here.

This has been going on for a while and based off this article the simple press releases and the congressmen starting to get involved is not actually going to do anything to help correct the situation.

I have a Christmas return that I sent right at the beginning of January and it has not been updated since saying it arrived at the carrier facility several weeks ago. It's currently preventing me from getting a refund but my problems are nothing compared to the people that don't have their medicine or other essential items (one lady had her wedding dress get delayed past her wedding date...). The incompetence leading to very harsh real world impacts is stunning.

Is there a map anywhere showing the coverage area of these impacted sorting facilities by chance?

We receive a lot of paper check payments by USPS at our office and this delay has been a nightmare.

Have a package caught up in the crap. Thankfully mine says it will be delivered this afternoon. I will believe it when I see it, but at least the tracking says something different finally.

from the article, postal employee thinks it could be April at the absolute earliest to get the sorting machines up and running.

Just amazing that they bought a machine too big for their facility. I guess they didn't have the 'see it in your' room option when ordering.

Went to UPS store on 1/16 to mail a package - it was closed due to winter storm. Decided to try the USPS - mistake. Dropped the package off 1/16 that was supposed to be delivered 1/19 - USPS tracker says package accepted and no other updates. Got a call from automated system saying "be patient, workikng through problems and package expected delivey 1/26" but tracker still shows it was only accpeted at the GOOF post office. Complete **** show. I'm glad it wasn't meds or checks!

We're the government and we're here to help...

Unless I have no other choice, I don't ship anything through USPS these days.

Really curious on the money flow and thought processes of the contractors/employees that did all the following:

- made decision to replace old machine(s) that seemed to be working good enough to not have the current situation … right before Christmas
- order a presumably expensive machine as a replacement without checking that it would actually work
- removed the old machine(s) still with no knowledge that the new one would not work
- tried to install the new machine and presumably this is when the mistake was realized
- not do anything to fix it in the weeks since … new machine? Fabricate the top big machine to make it work?
- let mail pile up to a point that it's not possible to get back ahead on all while not informing the public of how or when it'll be fixed
- bring in extra people (presumably getting loads of overtime) that won't even begin to make a dent in the massive backlog that needs a machine

Also what happens to the expensive but too big machine now? Is it just wasted?

Did literally no one think to check the measurements at any point in this entire ordeal? That's literally step one. People ask me measurements on random crap I am selling online but no one thought to check on this thing that will presumably impact millions of people and hundreds of million pieces of mail?

How many people in the impacted footprint want more govt in our day to day lives but won't make the connection that this is what more govt looks like?

Maybe this explains why it is taking weeks to get a replacement card in the mail that should have come in a few days.

I think I had a package get hung up in the very early days of this mess. Frustrating part was, it got delivered to a post office - just not the post office that makes deliveries in MY neighborhood. So back to the sorting facility it went, only to have no tracking updates for over a week. Package eventually showed up, but obviously the problem got exponentially worse over the last 6 weeks.

There is almost no way to avoid USPS when ordering things, either. Almost all of my online orders say they ship UPS - only to be handed off to the local post office for final delivery. Makes me so mad that they don't have to disclose that until it's too late.

This has been a disaster. We ship dozens of prescriptions daily. On random days, there are no issues with packages being delivered. On other days, they are delayed 2 weeks. We've been getting calls daily from our patients wondering where their script is. Have to send a replacement and ship using alternative carrier

Reminds me of this episode of Everybody Loves Raymond where the new kitchen oven didn't fit. Tried to find a gif of Ray trying to force it in. I can just imagine the Post office workers doing the same!

My son's freshman year, his marching band had these very large props as part of the show. They got to the region competition (or whatever it's called) and most of the props wouldn't fit through the gate that led to the field.

I was rushing to get there in time to watch and thought I'd made it in time when saw the props on the grass outside of the stadium. Oh, no…I missed the entire performance, as did the main props.

What's pathetic is that there are probably only 2 or 3 people at those facilities who actually give any kind of damn. They're all union and know they can't be fired.

It truly would not surprise me if it took YEARS to clean up this mess, if ever.

Surprisingly, all three of my family's passports were unaffected by this in the last month. Only thing I can think of is that messing with Federal mail is the one thing that might get them truly in trouble.

UPS Surepost and DHL with delivery by the post office have not been impacted by me. They get delivered to the local post office by UPS/DHL and then delivered by the post office to my mailbox. I've gotten two packages in the last week this way that never had scans at North Houston or Missouri City.

Maybe we can get a presidential campaign promise to eliminate the USPS entirely

The number of non-junk-mail items I get on an annual basis (other than packages) can probably be measured on one hand

I think sometimes they do get delivered straight to the local post office. In my situation, they delivered my package to the wrong post office, so it got kicked to a distribution/sorting facility.

Not always, but for some packages, I will get a "delivered" noticed from UPS - only to realize the delivery was to my post office. When this happens, sometimes I lose tracking info completely, and then a few days later the package just shows up in my box. Other times, UPS tracking says "transferred" to local USPS, and in that case, there usually is additional USPS tracking info (but it's usually delayed by a day or two).

In the case of my package that went missing, I just ordered a replacement and figured I'd return the first one if and when it ever showed up. The replacement arrived first (of course), but it didn't go to USPS at all - UPS delivered it. Same shipping method at checkout.

What's funny, well really kind of sad, is that I've started to notice on social media (Facebook neighborhood groups, Nextdoor, etc.) when these topics come up the obvious Democrats have been commenting on every thread with "First world problems".

It's like they've gotten the leadership in the city they wanted and standard expected services have gone to **** (trash, mail, etc.). They know it's gone to **** and can't defend it so just redirect as if these things aren't important (and who cares if taxpayers are paying for services we aren't getting).

Yeah, they are first world problems because WE DAMN WELL BUILT THE FIRST WORLD AND MADE IT A GOOD PLACE TO LIVE.

We don't want to be third world. Those MFs hate the first world and all the "oppression it has caused around the world."

I have eight packages somewhere in the Missouri City facility. A few of them have been there for three weeks.

Filing a missing package thing does absolutely nothing. Your case is referred to your local post office, which obviously doesn't help when they know where your package is, and can't do anything other than tell you they can't do anything.
