Cross Posted in R & P, hoping someone here has a lead.

Looking for a baptist church in/near Downtown Houston. I tried FBC- Downtown and was disappointed in the satellite model. Would really like to find a church with a traditional worship service and biblically conservative beliefs. Obviously willing to travel a bit to find a good place.

I bet there are some in the wards near downtown that are traditional and conservative.

Better be ready to be there until 2pm at the earliest release. They stay all day.

Your best bet would be the FBC campus off I-10 and 610. If you're open to a non-Baptist church, Seven Mile Road and Grace Bible both fit your billing.

I grew up going to South Main Baptist Church @ 4100 South Main Street. Check it out.

Look at Sojourn Montrose. It's part of a small connection of churches and is conservative.

Agree on Houston's first - if you want a smaller crowd go to the 5pm Sunday service / classes.

I've attended FBC-loop since 2007, so obviously I am loyal. I like pastor Greg and his biblically-centered teaching. I value the friendships we have there and our kids even attend school there. But good luck getting a traditional worship service: IMO that means featuring selections from the Baptist Hymnal backed by choir and organ, something I miss terribly.

Your choices are watching a performance of flavor of the month contemporary music with contemporary instruments or watching a choir sing "praise" music with a small orchestra. Of course neither performance provides the audience the benefit of sheet music, just words (if you are lucky), so good luck singing along. It turns the congregation into an audience instead of active participants IMO. I've got to think there would be strong demand for a more traditional worship service if only that choice was offered.

It's not Baptist, but (doctrinally very solid) Grace Bible Church (just west of The Heights) is great. So is Houston's First.

My family has gone to GBC since 2012. It's doctrinally about as biblically sound as you can hope for. Also, this:

I believe that West U Baptist still has a traditional early service with choir and hymnals, since they have a "contemporary" arm with Crosspoint Church. Pastor Roger Patterson is terrific.

You might consider Garden Oaks Baptist on Shepherd if you don't mind the drive. I think they have more of a praise team than traditional hymns, however, if that is what you mean by traditional. Another suggestion - you can view services online for most of these suggestions, so you can preview a selection of the services before you plan a visit.

South Main Baptist Church is very traditional in their worship, but I would consider them to be more moderate/progressive than most Baptist churches.

Although we are non-denominational, but you should try out Bethel Church of Houston, near the Galleria. While we do trend more toward contemporary worship, we also sing hymns with the pipe organ from time to time. We are a very solid in our preaching and biblical beliefs.

I was just about to post this. I was a member there for 18 years. It's the only thing about Houston that I miss since I moved.

We mainly went to Crosspoint for church and class, but would often go to WU for special services (e.g. Handel's Messiah) and for family events.

Given how things are going, try the Greek Orthodox Cathedral. Can't find anything more traditional or conservative than that!

You'd be surprised, actually, that there is quite a bit of woke at the Greek church.

If the Orthodox church is too "woke" for you, then you may need to re-evaluate a few things.

I'm talking about the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church and school in the Montrose area of Houston specifically, which I have quite a bit of knowledge about.

Traditional and conservative don't mean anything close to the same thing in this context.
94chem,
That, sir, was the greatest post in the history of TexAgs. I salute you. -- Dough
