August Hottest Month on Record for Houston

I've lived in Houston for decades but this summer was the first time I asked myself why I still put up with this heat. I thought my heat tolerance was just off this summer, but it was vindicating to see this from Space City Weather about August being the hottest month on record for Htown:

Quote:

According to data from the National Weather Service, the month of August finished with an extraordinary average temperature of 91.0 degrees. This is nearly 6 degrees higher than the "normal" average temperature for the month of August in Houston, 85.2 degrees.

Moreover, it exceeded the city's warmest month on recordany month in the last 150 years, mind you. This previous record temperature. 90.4 degrees, was set during the absolutely torrid month of August 2011. Temperatures this August were, by any measure, extreme and not-normal. The brown area in the graphic below shows the normal range of temperatures.

Honestly the hot mornings have been the hardest, it's easy to hit the pool or stay inside during August afternoons but even my 7am runs have been torturous. Good riddance indeed.

Almost no rain or overcast days (until recently in some areas) made it extra tough. Just non stop scorching sunlight. Wish we had more shade in our backyard.

They go on to say this was also the 2nd driest month on record. The relative lack of mosquitoes has been the only silver lining to an otherwise miserable summer.

Summer isn't over because August is.

September can be just as hot. It's Texas. If you can't handle it, move out.

As long as it's not another "hottest month on record" I think I'll manage

7 AM runs? F'man, I'm stepping out of my house at 5:20 AM and it's in the mid 80's. Never remember it being that hot early in the morning except when I was in Doha.

These kinds of facts are not welcome here.

By pointing out that Houston just experienced the hottest August on record, you are clearly signaling that you are a Greta-loving, human-caused-climate-change disciple that is in favor of climate lockdowns, and therefore a freedom-hating communist Nazi.

In short, it's always this hot in Houston during the summer, this is totally normal weather, and like Claytie Williams said, weather is inevitable, so might as well relax and enjoy it.

You got me! I want the government to make everyone here trade in their F-150s for E-bikes, move into 15 minute cities, sleep in pods, and eat bugs. The loss of your freedoms is a price I'm willing to pay to make my morning summer runs more pleasant.

This. I remember in 2013 it didn't cool off until November.

No mosquitoes? They're doing just fine around here.

I believe the data. At least on a recent history scale. Wouldn't be shocked if it's Tonga + El Niño.

Houston humidity usually makes hitting 100 relatively difficult. Since 1970 there have been 31 years where we NEVER hit 100F. The recorded record was 19 times in 1 year in 1902, a close second was 18 times in 2011.

So far this year we have hit 100 34 times and counting. I wouldn't be shocked if we hit it 40 times. It has been insane. 100F is actually a welcomed relief from the heat we've had.

That's just crazy. Don't think it's just Houston either, that high pressure dome that's been parked over the southwest all summer has baked a lot of the southern U.S.

Yeah it's Houston and Houston is always "hot" in the summer. But it's never been THIS hot, at least not since the city was founded.

100% result of Tonga eruption paired with high pressure dome of hell that won't budge.

Yep, that and some of these evenings actually feel pretty nice outside if there's any type of breeze blowing, thanks to the dryness.

Same in San Antonio. Our average temperature in August was 90.8 I believe.
We are at 66 or 67 days of triple digit temps.

Dome needs to hold for another 20 days or so and then we can talk about it moving.

My favorite part is where the temperature recording devices are at the airport surrounded by concrete tarmacs and planes blasting hot exhaust everywhere.

Not bothered. Airports have extremely accurate equipment because bad weather crashes planes. Official measures are recorded where the best equipment is located, very often that's a major airport.

Yep..and right on queue Lanza was out there blaming ERCOT for "not fixing the grid."

The problem is we let ERCOT be run by liberals like him for years and that's hindered to right fixes in favor of renewables...and so here we are.
