Our your old system has quite a few coolent leaks and we're looking at getting a new system. The first estimate we got was.$19.5k for a 3 ton 16 seer two stage Trane system and 22.5k for a 3 ton 18 seer variable Trane system. This is for the replacment with minimal duct work. I know system prices have been increasing but wanting to see what others have experienced while getting a couple more estimates. TIA

Adding that the furnace and air handler were included in the quotes.

Granted it was in Gonzales County, but my parents just paid right about $8k for a new 5 ton system.

Those quotes are a hose job. Can't recall who it is, but someone will drop the contact here soon enough. There is an Aggie that posts here and does residential AC

Just got a second quote that was similar. Both companies are by us in the League city area.

Your parents clearly didn't get a Trane.

It was a Trane

You telling me Trane is worth over 2x with a lesser warranty?
It's most likely the two stage and variable speed that OP was quoted. Along with a little extra for Trane. No way he'll recoup those electrical costs over the life of the system.

I stand corrected, but they didn't get a 2 stage or variable. The comfort of a 2 stage or variable costs.

And for those that say the you don't make up the cost with a 2 stage or variable, it is about comfort, especially with our humidity.

Even if they did do 2 stage variable, it's not a $12k difference on a smaller unit. Those quotes are very high still

Southbelt are good people if you are in their area. OP quotes are insane.

Both places are offering a cash discount but they've done their math and there no savings either way. The single stage was much cheaper ($10-12k).

SA Specialties replaced mine last year. They had very fair pricing.

Are they quoting you a new handler/furnace too? When we replaced our downstairs unit, all of the companies tried to toss one of those in there as well and it was an extra $6K.

I paid $9800 last August for a 4 ton 16 SEER system (furnace, coil, condenser) plus a bunch of duct work. This was thousands less than other quotes I received.

I just bought a 2 or 2.5 ton AC unit for my upstairs. I think it was around $8400 with new unit, new furnace, and minimal duct work.

That's craziness. I paid $22k for a 4 ton and a 3 ton Lennox unusable with new furnaces installed. You need a new quote.

I used Guy's AC and Heating and they were very professional and efficient. Also had 5 year 0% financing through Wells Fargo.

About a year and a half ago I got a 4 ton, 20.3 SEER, variable Trane w/ gas furnace for $14k.

The variable unit is awesome, worth every penny.

Two years ago.. 1970 home.

22k

Bellaire Air -Charles Devine 832-556-0121

Not sure what that cost would be today. At the time that was the best, non shady salesman I got.

I'd expect a quality install from a quality company for a two speed system with a VS air handler would be 15-20k. If it's less, I'm going to dig hard on where I'm getting cheated. In Houston there is zero chance I'm using anything less than the system above. Comfort is what your paying for. I have used Enviromax for estimates in the past and they are dead in line with other companies that are of similar size, selling quality equipment, who I know have been in business a while and will actually be in business when I need warranty work.

The ones getting units for 10k or less are usually side gig folks. Usually they havnt been in business long, or they won't be in business when I need them. I avoid them at all costs. You can get a unit cheap or you can get a quality unit with quality backing from a company, you can't have both. Choose accordingly.

If it isn't too late, call Galen Beede at Beede AC & Heat. 281-222-9591.

He installed a Goodman unit in our last house. It was a fraction of the price of the "brand name" systems everyone else wanted to put in. Goodman is made in Katy and has a lifetime compressor warranty and 10-year unit replacement and parts warranties. Galen registered our unit for us. It worked great, too. No problems at all with it.

We moved but Galen is still the man I call to service our A/C units and perform regular maintenance on them. We have a very expensive system in our new house... he figured out it's still under warranty and made sure to get it registered for us in case the very expensive parts ever need replacing.

https://www.foxnews.com/opinion/bidens-cold-war-anti-air-conditioner-regulations-keep-piling-up

Quote:

Unfortunately, new Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations are limiting supplies of these refrigerants the result of a law targeting them as contributors to climate change. The production quotas have driven up their price about three-fold, and a recharge may cost $100 to $500 more than before these provisions took effect, depending on how much replacement refrigerant is needed.
Quote:

Central air conditioners are already impacted while a proposed new regulation for window units is in the early stages, and in both cases the claimed climate change benefits are a big part of the agency's rationale. Installers say central systems jumped by up to $1,000 when the new rule took effect last Jan. 1, and a total cost of $10,000 is no longer a rarity.

Not to be left out, the EPA has a new proposed regulation that would put additional upward pressure on air conditioner prices by outlawing the most affordable remaining models in 2025. The agency is doing so because - you guessed it these systems are deemed insufficiently climate friendly. Specifically, they use a refrigerant considered a potent greenhouse gas, while new redesigned systems have been engineered to use more environmentally-benign ones.
Quote:

And if you are wondering where the big air conditioner manufacturers stand on all of this, they actually joined forces with environmental activists and petitioned the agency for the rule, the effect of which is to create a captive market for the greener but costlier new models they have conveniently already developed.

I think Trane is the most expensive.

I used Aquarium AC out in Stafford for an AC replacement a couple of years ago. Super impressed with them.
