This has been on the news lately. Any opinions as to whether this is just the Pappas family throwing a tantrum over not being picked or an actual poor decision made by COH bureaucrats?

I admit the story of the contract going to a Spanish company over a local company makes a good sound bite in Pappas favor, if that is actually true.

Shouldn't it go to who will get most money to the city?

Pappas should pay more if it wants a renewed deal

This is a hilarious quote from Turner:

Quote:

Mayor Sylvester Turner defended the process.

"It is a competitive procurement process and we are obligated to follow the competitive procurement process no matter and you know I like Pappadeaux," Turner said.

Nobody believes Turner is suddenly concerned with following the rules.

Although I fly out of IAH 90%+ of the time, I always appreciated Hobby having Pappas and other options. Now that OTG has taken over IAH in Terminal C, while it all looks nice, everything is minimum $25 and the drinks are ridiculous, and all the ipads they installed never get used because they make you just scan a QR code now to order. I hate having to order thru that when there is a human standing behind bar waiting on you to punch in your $25 drink on the phone. sounds like they may be trying to bring in a concessionaire type and charge more $$.

This is another contract award to one of Turner's friends, who has no catering or concession experience, so he can get a kickback. That is why Pappas did not win the contract.

As stated above, you will now see even more inflated prices at airports because Turner and Rodney Ellis need their kickbacks. No difference between Sly's dealings and Lina awarding the COVID research to a one woman firm over University of Texas Health. What is going on in the City of Houston and Harris County is egregious.

Same thing is happening with the bike lanes and Section 8 housing. 43rd St. at Ella is getting ready to have the same problems 11th st is having as the city is going to put in bike lanes and reduce the available lanes from 4 to 2. The citizens do not want it but Sly needs his kickback as his term is coming to an end. Kirby is getting ready to have Section 8 housing put in and one of Turner's law partners is the one leading the project.

If it was such a transparent process, why don't they release the "score card"?

Sly doesn't do anything that doesn't benefit Sly.

isn't the competitor a spanish company that does catering and concessions? where are you seeing they have no experience?

also, has the contract even been awarded yet?

(Sly is getting a kickback even if pappas get the contract)

"Shouldn't it go to who will get most money to the city? "

Sure…………in theory. But the numbers presented to the city council, are just that, theoretical calculations presented by the competition.

What if their food sucks or simply isn't popular? Then the numbers are meaningless. My question is why mess with what has been a success (even the city council admits that) for a total unknown with a 10 year contract. 1 or 2 years I could see, but 10 years is just stupid.

Houston City Council……….stupid……….ok, it actually seems quite sensible when you put it like that.

Helen Giddings (former state representative), who sat next to Sly for 20+ years, is on the contract. The Spanish company will be doing the actual catering. Kickbacks + actual catering is what increases costs.

The contract will be awarded to Giddings. I'll eat my shoe if it does not. The decision has already been made even if it isn't official.

To address the SheJack rumors, this is precisely why she wants to be Mayor. There isn't any power as a congressman. You're 1 of 435. She wants the power and the kickbacks.

Gotcha on Giddings connection. She doing any actual work for Areas? Or just the connection to city council & sly?

Reading more it looks like Pappas acknowledges Areas had better numbers, but is questioning the realisticness of those projections.

Would not surprise me at all if Giddings gets it. Having best deal on paper easy for council to vote for even if projections are BS

Just a connection to Sly. She is already on one airport contract at Bush for the new Terminal D. This type of contract has happened with Giddings and they just increased the amount of fraud this time.

Sly is doing this out in the open and everyone knows (city council, DAs office, federal). He doesn't think anyone will stop him.

This reminds me of what one of our government affairs people told me early in my career:

By the time you apply to just about any government program that has a procurement process, it's already been awarded. Perfect example is grant funding - someone else lobbied to have it written exactly that way, with such a focus and need that of course the one company was the only choice.

Gov procurement needs the deepest of cleansing, nasty business and the root of so many issues

I get why Houston and Harris county would turn a blind eye, but where is Paxton's office in all this?

How difficult is it to find some poofter down on Montrose to carry a bag of money and don some knee pads over at Sly's townhouse? Figured old timers like the Pappas would have a couple independent contractors like that on the rolodex. I bet they do now.

As far as ranking the 4 Pappas restaurants in Hobby, I don't think you will find much argument it is the least desirable and is poor representation of Texas BBQ.

I mean, it's not anywhere near the top of the line stuff like Truth and Pinkerton's, but it's also leaps and bounds better the Spring Creeks of the world.

That said, the burger at Pappa's BBQ is very legit

Michael Berry did a good segment on this the other day.

The firm that was picked to replace Pappa's has Mayor Turner's desk partner from when he was in the Texas lege as one of the executives. She has exactly zero experience on anything food service, ever. But she shared a desk with Turner for 35 or whatever years...so they are good friends now.

This is standard Mayor Turner operations - his buddies get contracts, he gets a kickback. The taxpayes and actual local businesses get the shaft. Or, as we like to call it, day to day operations in the City of Houston.

very familiar story:

Quote:

Mayor Sylvester Turner fired the city's housing director Tuesday after he publicly accused the mayor of manufacturing a "charade" of a competitive process to steer affordable housing money to a select developer against the recommendation of staff.

According to state documents, a company listed as a "co-general partner" and "co-developer" with a stake in the deal, Harbor Venture Group, is run by the mayor's longtime law partner, Barry Barnes, and another partner at Barnes' firm, Jermaine Thomas. Turner left the firm after being elected mayor in 2015.

Yep. Goes to the "standard operating procedure" comment.

Turner DGAF - he knows absolutely nothing will happen to him so he doesn't even attempt to hide the grift and corruption anymore. Why should he go through all of that extra work when there is zero consequence no matter what?

Good gig if you can get it I suppose. Guarantee you he makes 10x his mayor's salary on the annual kickbacks for ensuring his friends and partners get the government cheese.

Totally agree. Their BBQ is better than every chain BBQ place I have ever tried and a fair few of the mom and pop places. But not in the league of my favorites, Corkscrew or Tejas Chocolate and Barbecue.

The burger is outstanding.

This is the political poison dilemma. People who want to abuse the power have more to gian personally so are way more motivated. Which makes them more likely to win.
