How long do you want to ignore this user?
Now that my MIL passed, my FIL is all alone with no one around him and not much to do. We're thinking about moving him to a senior living community (more like apartments than assisted living) that has activities, people he can interact with, and maybe even a dining hall. If any of you have any recommendations for places we can look at on the northside, it would be appreciated. He lives in New Caney, so somewhere along the 59 corridor would be ideal. Of course, we'd like to have him closer to us so we can see him more frequently.

TIA

Eden Terrace in Kingwood is/was pretty nice. My mother lived there and loved it! They have independent living and then assisted living if it's needed.

No recommendations but that is a tough one. He may want to stay in the home he shared with his wife, stay around neighbors if they are friends etc as well as garage/backyard space to hang out, grill,

My thoughts on from visiting many senior living while working in EMS is they are like any apartment complex. Parking sucks, stairs to climb, no garage to keep vehicle, cost increase from year to year.

We certainly aren't opposed to that. It's not any farther from us than he is now.

He has been previously resistant to moving, but he is already expressing concern about the house being so empty and feeling alone. All his friends in the neighborhood are either dead or have moved away. He's 74 and at the point where maintaining an acre of land and a decaying mobile home is a nearly insurmountable task.

+1 for Eden Terrace. My aunt lived there for several years. The folks were very nice and the place seemed well managed to me.

Looks like it must have changed hands. It is now called Reunion Court of Kingwood. Same place, different name.

Do not consider Park Manor in Humble off 59.

One of the worst decisions I ever made.

Consider a live in coming in to support?

Agree with this completely. My mom went there for rehab after a broken hip. They left her sitting in the hallway in a wheelchair for hours (we think it was all day) with her heel resting on the edge of her wheelchair step. She got such a deep and eventually infected pressure sore on her heel that she ended up spending 8 weeks in methodist hospital's skilled nursing facility in the med center being treated by wound care and infectious disease specialists to keep the infection from getting into her bones. They were extremely understaffed and the attitude of everybody working there when asked to help with anything was "that is not my job".

He is not in a condition where he needs assistance with mobility or other basic self-care. That could always change, but it's not the case right now. We want to give him the opportunity to be in a place where there are other people around, things to do, and he doesn't have to worry about maintaining the property anymore. If he stays bored and lonely all the time, he probably won't last.

I went there numerous times when I was in the funeral business. I know all about that place.

That was the benefit of the Eden Terrace facility (now Reunion Court) is that they had a wing for people who needed little or no assistance (independent living) and could ramp up the level of the assistance (assisted living) as time passed if that was needed. And if they eventually needed memory care, they could move to the adjacent facility and still be near their friends.

My overall advice is to go to the places you want to focus on during the week, but also go on the weekends, and ask specifically to meet the activity director. That person will be the key to how much goes on and how diverse the activities are. There are some just going through the motions and doing the same 3-4 activities all the time, while others do a wide variety of things through the month and do field trips, etc. Some will have nothing scheduled for the weekends at all, and some have stuff going all week long.

my grandfather lives in the Forum in the woodlands. it's basically apartments i think, with levels of assistance depending on what you need. he's in his 90s but very independent and seems to enjoy living there.

What do these better places cost and does Medicare pay anything? Just thinking about my parents down the (hopefully long) road.

Before he passed my GF was living at The Forum right there at 610 and I-10 next to First Baptist.

He had his own little apartment but they had a dining hall, planned activities, field trips, etc. He surprisingly enjoyed it and we had no complaints. Staff and fellow residents were all great.

We were/are looking at more 55+ apartments for my MIL, since she is active and driving, and just really needs to downsize. Augusta Woods is on the back side of the woodlands. It's a good setup, one building with all interior halls, etc. a lot of activities, and not too horribly pricy. Instead she went with one on the east side of 45 in Oak Ridge-oak haven. Older apartments -more mid 80's than brand new, and date, but really close to her church and friends , etc. really good green space and walking trails.

My ex MIL moved to a Brookdale property last year. She's quite happy with it and the activities every day.

Check out Arella on Jones in Jersey Village. Wife is regional manager for that property. On site nail and hair salon for men and women, restaurant and bar (don't have to buy a meal plan), swimup bar, yoga studio, game room, other stuff too. Some floor plans even have bidets. Lol

We've had a good experience at a Brookdale property, too.

My mom was at the Brookdale on Cutten Rd. She loved the Elvis impersonator that would perform there every few months. We had a 90th birthday party for her and the other residents there. Staff was excellent.

Outside the box; but is it possible to just put him in your AirBnB for a bit instead? That way he is around family/familiar people and will likely be significantly cheaper than an assisted living. Pay yourself the rent instead of an assisted living facility and use the difference to have a nurse/cleaning lady come in a couple times/week.

Not sure if it is just me, but 74 seems a little young for an assisted living too. Regardless, not an easy decision to make. Best of luck.

I know it's still there because my daughter is a part of her elementary school's chior and they went there in the fall.

If you're looking to buy something, there are senior apartments on Kings Crossing (Arbor's Terrace?) that my mom looked at when she turned 55. Can't comment on what they're like, but they're gated if security is something important.

I came here to recommend the same place-- my grandmother lived there the last few years of her life and it was a nice place. She lived in the independent living part, but they still had 2 meals per day for them.

agreed...lots of activities.

My grandmother continued to play piano for their church services as well as uncountable hours of bingo!
When I would be home for the weekend she would try to give me all the things she won playing bingo that week

I would sometimes visit my mom for happy hour. The pink wine was awful but they had alot of fun and seemed to have something for everyone.

hey Ryan, about 5-6 years ago I had a freelance job writing for Discovery Senior Living, which owns some high-end retirement communities all over the country, but several in Texas. I got to interview a bunch of residents at several of them across the country, and did one of the interviews with a razor-sharp 96 year old guy at one out in the Woodlands. Place was immaculate, staff, was friendly, was like a resort. I don't know the budget you're working with, but Discovery Senior Living has several places in the greater Houston area, I've copy/pasted their addresses and phone numbers below of the ones on the north side of the H.

Conservatory At Alden Bridge
6203 Alden Bridge Drive

Conservatory At Champion Forest

The budget we're working with is based on what we can get by selling the property he lives on.
