I take the family down to Crystal beach a few times a year. We rent a beach house and between the wife and 3 kids we require a lot of "stuff" to make the day as well as needing a shuttle for #2's. We take the deer lease ranger with us and have been for years.

This weekend we were stopped twice by the sheriff's department, once with just me in the ranger and the other with my wife was driving the kids. After the first time getting stopped and what felt like harassed I went to find out what happened. It seems in February of this year they banned anything they consider not a golf cart from driving in the neighborhood roads. From the few other posts about it, residents were complaining that the rules were not being enforced. It was a mad house this weekend and the cops were out but not enough it seemed to deter anyone. I want to follow the rules, but I also don't want to give in to a cash grab from the golf cart rental companies or locals.

It seems I can get "golf cart" plates for my ranger pretty cheap and easily. I would really just like this to go away or for the cops to "profile" a little more and leave the families out of it.

It's literally a $15-$20 fee at your county tax office and they give you a little plate to display. I think you can drive on any road under 35 or 40 mph speed limit. Piece of cake.

Definitely a cash grab, that little plate isn't making anything safer.

Best solution is to stop slummin it with the Whiskey Tango and rent somewhere else besides Crystal Beach.

I'm pretty sure that's why they made this new rule but seems like nothing has changed with the cops down there. We used to rent places July 4th weekends and those cops did not F around with anyone.

Edit: Realize you're talking about ATVs - that makes more sense.

We were down there on 4th street this weekend and didn't have any issue, but maybe we weren't in the same neighborhood.

I think the beach has always been a 'state road' that required license plates of some sort of 'golf' marking on golf carts. Back in the day we got hassled for driving a mule on the beach and you can't legally drive dirt bikes, 4 wheelers etc.

I was in Surfside yesterday and I saw a couple dirtbikes, 4 wheelers, Rangers etc. Not sure if the cops cared.

I thought he meant a normal vehicle like a Ford Ranger. I imagine the ATVs were getting out of control and they want to clean things up a bit. Makes more sense now!

We were at Crystal Beach this weekend and saw just about every kind of ranger, 4 wheeler, golf cart, etc. The current trend seems to be the multi color LED light bars sticking out of the back.

Ranger as in Polaris Ranger, a side by side or UTV or ROV (Recreational Off-road Vehicle). They don't want people driving them on the neighbrohood roads and 87. Golf carts are still allowed, but "golf cart" is kinda dumb since what people have out there are lifted with offroad tires and no club storage. I got into it with an officer about the definition of a golf cart and they have been instructed that the line is that the golf cart was originally intended for use on a golf course.

I don't see any difference between my side-by-side and these off road golf carts for the use of shuttling people and beach gear back and forth from the beach to the beach house.

That's similar to what they told us 15 or so years ago. Same weekend a cop made me carry an abandoned toilet to our beach house as someone had dumped it near where we set up to throw beads to the golden triangle WT ladies.

A buddy got arrested for pissing behind the dunes one year and they threatened him with a s3x offender charge if he didn't plead guilty.
