Started a few years ago, at least in SW Houston. Gets worse every year.

I suspect it's been a thing in Latin American culture for some time.

Urban aerial gunfire on Christmas Eve. Goodbye, first world.

Yeah, I've read that it's a Central American tradition. But I suspect it's spread beyond the Latinx population by now. The bang bang isn't just coming from a couple miles away anymore, it's in the neighborhood.

Lots of family members have lived in Mexico and never mentioned it or didn't know about it, so I wonder if it's a newer tradition, or something that was more regional until recently. Whatever it is, it's trashy.

I think this year it's more a function of everyone had their Christmases cancelled so they are trying to overcompensate. Fireworks have been bad in Austin tonight too.

I've lived here my entire life and fireworks on Christmas Eve have only been a thing for the last couple years. Latinos been here longer than that so not sure what's changed.

It's insane. Like the GD 4th of July. And yeah the grand finale went off right at midnight.

With the in-laws for the first time. We are off San Felipe and it sounds like a war zone

My quick google research has me thinking that fireworks are bigger in other central American countries, not Mexico. Might explain why we didn't get them much back when the only brown people we knew were Mexicans.

I'll have to remember to ask my mom about that tomorrow.

Someone around here didn't get the memo about the grand finale being thirty ago.

I expect the government will ruin that and won't allow the sale of fireworks until after Christmas

I don't get it.

The one night you damn sure want the kids to go to bed so Santa can come and the parents can finally go to bed, these jackasses decide it needs to sound like Beirut.

Genius!

I figure it's just a function of fireworks stands being open, and overgrown kid-dad can't resist dropping a couple hundy that he doesn't have on a couple of hours of temporal fun at the expense of his neighbors.

At 1am I went and asked the revelers a couple houses away to stop the fireworks for the night and they kindly stopped. They had little kids out there with them still!

Why won't these people think of the PTSD vets and nervous pets? Someone's yappie little dog might have an upset tum-tum.

Fireworks are the sound of freedom. Move to San Francisco or New York City with your Xanax/Prozac medicated dog.

Lived in Guatemala City for years. On 7 Dec. there is the tradition of Burning the Devil when everyone sweeps up all the leaves and trash and pine straw in the streets and then puts a little pinata like Devil on top of the pile that is loaded with fire crackers and at sunset the whole city lights em off. Smokey and noisy. On Christmas Eve at mid night everyone sets off an almost indescribable amount of fire crackers. not so much aerial ones as these long long lines of what we think of of Chinese fire crackers which are called ametralladoras (machine guns) with a big popper at the end. Unbelievable racket for about 15 minutes like the climax of 100 Pickett's charges. Can not find words to describe the volume of noise and smoke.

I'm sure our many new neighbors from this part of the world are enjoying the same traditions.
I feel so much better since about 11 a.m. CT on 20 Jan. 2025
