I'm sure it's a different profile but crazy is crazy. People get different highs. Back then it was probably more of a slow burn because that's how society operated. They enjoyed seeing the blurb in the news over multiple days.

These days most are into speed and instant gratification. Quick and cheap thrill over and over. People also tend to mimic what's getting the attention at the time as well.

Seems the media is more interested in promoting instant numbers over slow numbers these days. I'm sure there's still serial killers out there but they're more likely to get caught sooner than later and don't get the attention the mass killers get. That slow burn high is gone to a degree.

I'm no brain expert but anyone willing to take the life of another human is crazy. Especially those that are willing to take the lives of multiple humans they have no relationship with.

The other thing is lead. Since we quit putting it in gasoline, people started becoming less crazy. I realize that is not the only reason, but it doesn't help.

That show Cosmos had a good episode on this.

The reboot of Cosmos, not the original Carl Sagan one.

Beg to differ. There are more crazy people, and they have more outlets and more ways to find acceptance or justification for their craziness. If there has been a decline in serial killers, which we don't really know, I'd think it's a reflection of technology or simply finding other outlets or more profitable channels for their tendencies

You make a good point.

In the internet era people are a click away from finding a willing participant in whatever crazy **** they are into.

That probably has a lot to do with it.

hard to dispute there's been a decline.

If you want to argue the nutjobs have changed over to spree killings, I guess you could, but I think that's a very different type of criminal

More details from EquuSearch:

Elmer Wayne Henley says there are more victims out there and they couldn't remember exactly where they put the victims.

Earth Measurement Corporation will be using a sophisticated piece of technology called Ground Penetration Radar to help Texas EquuSearch locate the still-missing boys.

David Brooks died of the covids.

Elmer Wayne Henley still in jail.

I was in the room here one day... watchin' the Mexican channel on TV. I don't know nothin' about Pele. I'm watchin' what this guy can do with a ball and his feet. Next thing I know, he jumps in the air and flips into a somersault and kicks the ball in - upside down and backwards... the dang (sc) goalie never knew what the hell hit him. Pele gets excited and he rips off his jersey and starts running around the stadium waving it around his head. Everybody's screaming in Spanish. I'

Elmer Wayne Henley being considered for "compassionate release", most likely because of his health. That guy needs to die alone in his prison cell.

The FBI estimates that there are between 25 and 50 active serial killers in the US at any given time. Many have been active for years and just haven't been caught yet.

I think many of y'all are overestimating the impact of modern tech on the existence of serial killers. While I think the days of the "Hollywood" type serial killers (Gacy, Bundy, Dahmer, etc.) are probably past us (the sexual fetishist with body count in the dozens) may be gone, there are still plenty of "invisible people" (hookers, runaways, etc) that don't really get much attention when they disappear.
Hell, there's a dude in Sacramento RIGHT NOW just murdering men for the fun of it, and these are everyday folks, not hookers and the like.

Has anyone heard of the Houston 'Icebox Murders'?

Was born here and had never heard of this case until a few years ago when someone mentioned that they lived on the same street as the Icebox Murder house.

The suspect was an Aggie. Enrolled at A&M in 1942.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Rogers_(murder_suspect)

Don't read unless you want to be thinking about this case for the next few days.

Not really fair to call him an Aggie (sorry, I don't buy the "once and Aggie, always an Aggie" line). He dropped out. Ended up at Cougar High and graduated from there.

Probably best suited for a thread of its own but has anyone watched the Netflix doc about the Texas Killing Fields?

On the list but haven't gotten around to watching yet

Went through two episodes last night. Very well done. Ron Howard is involved with it. Not too much crying over lost kids, but enough so you feel some serious empathy for the families, especially if you have kids. Worth the watch so far. Hits close to home, literally. I live in the LC and my folks live in Dickinson.

KTRK somehow won't let me copy & paste, but they've released a reconstructed image of the last unknown victim of John Doe, along with pictures of the clothes he was wearing.

Man. That outfit was something. That sicko deserved to die way sooner than he did. He probably spotted that kid a mile away and offered him drugs or money.

Saw on Facebook that August 8th was the 50th anniversary of the kid killing Dean and calling his mom to end it all.

Yeah, I read a bunch of stuff about the case several years ago after never hearing about it before.

The manner in which he tortured those kids…just horrible.

I found out about the Poe School bombing around the same time. I've had relatives attend that school.

With all that's come out with Epstein, Hollywood and this most recent announcement by the DOJ, you got to wonder how long all this has been going on on a nationwide basis. At the time of Corll it was dismissed as a conspiracy theory and swept under the rug.
