I really want to rent a kayak some morning before it gets beyond too hot, but Bayou City adventures always say the currents are unsafe. Is there anyone else who does it here or do they have the market cornered? is it actually at unsafe levels or are they just over cautious?

Austin kayak is probably the best if you can transport it.

I don't think there is another option for rental onsite at buffalo bayou.

If you can transport a kayak, your best bet is probably ACK and go down to Galveston state park.

If only we had a large body of water with numerous access points nearby where a person wouldn't have to worry much about downstream current.

Try https://www.kayakshackkemah.com/ paddle around Clear Lake Shores. And, it is already too hot.

I don't know if they still do or not but REI on Westheimer used to rent kayaks. And I'm pretty sure ACK both up near the Woodlands and in Bellaire do. Southwest Paddlesports near the Woodlands does rentals too.

The water level in Buffalo bayou is high and is moving fairly fast. I do a lot of kayak fishing and I wouldn't paddle in the current conditions.

I talked to the Bayou guy today and he told me to check back tomorrow morning and he could tell me, but it sounded unlikely. I learned more about the resovoirs in that conversation than I ever expected to.

I'm not really looking to roadtrip or anything, just want to go paddle by myself for a fun/different workout every so often

the address I checked out showed 2.5 hours away?

I mean it's not a road trip, but it's a far drive to spend an hour or so on a kayak and turn around to drive back home.

Was I looking at the wrong place?

edit: my dumbass didn't notice that gps was still on cycle mode from this morning....its a 2.5 hour bike ride.

I bought Intek inflatable kayaks on Amazon for $75. They are awesome. We take them everywhere. Just went on a 4 hour river trip in Missouri last week. Had them on Lake Sam Rayburn, San Jacinto River, camping in Oklahoma. I bought 3 of them and a patio storage box for a total of $350.

Did you not read any of my explanations about the reservoirs on the Harvey threads? Yeah. Buffalo bayou is high because they are draining the reservoirs. Once they go down, buffalo bayou becomes manageable again.

so he was a little surprised they are so high and thinks maybe they are retaining because of a log jam or something. or because they don't like him. He was explaining the specific levels and how low is the minimum before people cant paddle upstream anymore...stuff like that.

I probably did read it, but that was many beers ago and a totally different context.

If you head out to Columbus, there is a nice little family run shop where you put in, then they come get you when you are done and take you back to the office where your car awaits.

Not horribly hot on the water, but you will want to hose off and have a towel to sit on in your car afterwards.
