Don't remember the exact reason why, but remember the resounding sentiment was F them. As such, I must say, F them. Sorry, but the Tine board has already spoken on this matter.

Basically, he's a commercial fisherman and he's been quoted as referring to gulf red snapper as "my fish". Recreational snapper fisherman have been taking it in the seat of the pants over the last several years with respect to bag limits and length of season while the commercial guys get to fish year round (talking federal waters here, not state). Contentious issue. But he seems to think the fish belong to the commercial enterprise, not the private citizen...or at least that the way it came across.

Maybe others have other bones to pick with him or can elaborate on or correct my recollection.

As I understand they basically are his fish. He owns a large share of the commercial red snapper quota in the Gulf of Mexico. I don't really fault him for the quota, but his attitude toward recreational fishing was questionable at best. In one of the episodes, he and his silicone can wife jumped in their Audi and road tripped to Austin to visit with a TX State Rep about the recreational quota. Didn't go over well with show's audience. It only ran for one season. No word if Buddy declined another season or Nat Geo didn't renew. I'm guessing the former.

Ever since (1) seeing the long-liners in the harbor unloading undersized snaps by the 1000s, while me and my crew get a week (or two days) to pull in 2 f'ing snaps a piece, and (2) reading about all the black market crap that Ruggles and others pulled, I won't eat snapper in a restaurant any more. My own personal protest, but those guys tried to make it where recreational fisherman were all but banned from snapper fishing, so I'm not giving my money to anyone who supports their business by buying their catch.

Exactly my feelings as well. And I damn sure won't patronize Buddy Guindon's new restaurant.

From the article

Brett Otteman of Landry's Inc. is now the general manager at this seafood outpost, 2000 Wharf Road, which should formally open to the public on Oct. 4.

Is there a game warden that checks your catch every time that you go deep sea fishing?

Heard Buddy bragging that he owns the Galveston fishery and those who patrol it. He further bragged that he will get enough fish to make a good profit.

Guess which Galveston seafood house is complaining that Battleship Texas is going to ruin their views and maybe damage their property if a hurricane comes in?

Saw that...

The ship has ridden out every storm that's come to the upper Texas Coast since 1948. She'll be just fine. That guy might not want his view of the water blocked, but all the other reasons given scream ignorance and make him look like a fool.

Also, I'm guessing whatever docks at the wharf behind your structure isn't your decision. Want to control what docks there, lease the wharf.

Tough **** about "his" award winning view. I guess the ship will block sight of the drilling rigs across the channel at Gulf Copper.

The ship will probably bring in more business than it would drive away, so I'm kind of suspicious what his motivation is complaining about it.

Fertitta chimes in…

Dash Kohlhausen Landry's Deputy General Counsel also shared this statement:

"While the proposed location for the historic Battleship Texas may block some of the views of Landry's harbor front properties, Willie G's, Harbor House, etc., and a few others, it will also attract more than a million visitors a year to the area. This will be a boon for all of us and the island's entire tourism industry. The Battleship Texas is the last remaining United States battleship to serve in both World War I and World War II and for Galveston to be a part of this patriotism and serving as a tourist attraction at the same time is really special.

I'd rather look at the Battleship than stare and a bunch of half built rusty drill rigs, dry docked ships, and chemical tanks.

Not only that, they will take you snapper fishing on their CC offshore boats that are registered as commercial vessels and you can bring home a ton of snapper, well over the recreational limit. You're basically paying to be a deckhand and catch fish and then you have to buy a certain # of pounds of fish at a predetermined price.

So not only are they screwing recreational fishermen they're screwing guides who make a living on recreational fishermen.

I went there once shortly before reading on here that it was owned by the Devil. This might be the first time I've admitted that.

One gets the feeling that Uncle Tillman might put an end to this practice. Katie's might become "Maceos"….thus fulfilling a "family" promise dating back to the 1950s…

I cant think of one legitimate reason why any business owner wouldn't want the battleship in Galveston. Especially those who own restaurants on the water that would offer an awesome view of it while eating and drinking.

Maybe people frequenting restaurants on the water prefer the even more awesome view of water with boats and ships passing by. You'd have to be an idiot to not see how this would be bad for restaurant owners.
