It wasn't THAT bad. The hot tots were good.

Was definitely a "now I remember why I haven't been here in so long" spot.

I assume they are closing because the value of their real estate has appreciated greatly in the past 10 years, like Otto's.

Kind of like the "Barbeque" Inn on Yale. Yes, it has BBQ, but you go there for fried chicken and CFS.

You're failing pretty miserably at life if you go to Hickory Hollow and don't order a CFS.

Pretty sad to see them go, but as mentioned earlier I imagine that real estate is too valuable nowadays.

Interesting to see what goes up in that spot.

One thing I did not know was that the Hickory Hollow up near Sam Houston Race Park is the original location. Looks like they are still going strong.

Hickory Hollow goes but the hookah bar stays open. Something wrong with that.

I used to drive by that hookah bar every day and have never seen more then like 5 people in that place... is it ever busy?

No. The sign always has their special happy hour of the day, which is some sort of discount on hookah and usually PBR. Never seen a soul in there. But I don't frequent Washington at night, just drive by early evening on the way home.

Their chicken fried chicken is legit. Too much batter on the CFS.

I always just assumed is was a money laundering front.

Yeah not impressed by their CFS for the last decade or so. Loved the live music and atmosphere in the middle of the city, though.

I can remember going to that one not long after we moved out that way in 1977. I now live not to far away and we have gone back once or twice..CFS both times.

They don't own the property in the Heights. It was a lease. I worked at the Fairbanks location when I was in high school, as did my older brothers and other guys that lived in the neighborhood. I saw enough goin on on the kitchen to make me never eat there.

Not sad or happy to see it go. Went a couple of times just for the CFS about 12 years ago. Was not the meat to batter/breading ratio that I like so never went back. (FYI - the meat cut was too thin and batter too thick for me to enjoy.)

Used to enjoy the platter with a CFS and BBQ. I also used to weigh a lot more.

Truth BBQ opening up across Washington on Heights in the old J Blacks.

Pretty of ballsy of them not to to have closed down and opened as something new by now to shake the LE off their scent. Or they might just be greasing the right palms.

Without a doubt a money laundering place.

I am almost convinced you could put Franklin BBQ in that building and it would fail. Not that anything worth a damn has gone in there before, but some spots are just cursed.

How many places has that spot been.. J Blacks was only there a couple of years.

Anyone know what's going into the Sammy's Wild Game Grill location?

It's been two things since it was a mechanic shop. One was an awful BBQ spot, and J Blacks was there for 5+ years. Hardly seems cursed.

It will be interesting to see how his great food, not so great service model works where he'll actually have some competition. It's easy to look like a rose amongst weeds in Pearland.

STQ is a tiny little spot, but they are operating in town in a very competitive category, and are doing just fine so far.

Or even lend his name to a Pappa John's pizza!
