I know it's louder with it shut, but it's dang near perfect outside. What's the point in having the ability to open the roof of you're never gonna open it?

Yes. I was there for a Jags game 7 years ago. Actually had a fly over by the Breitling jet team. It's the only game I've ever seen at Reliant/NRG with the roof open.

When is it ever open?

Wasted money IMO.

Minute Maid roof was open a ton this season on April/May. Plus it's open every day for sunlight for the grass

I remember going to a Sunday Night Football game back in 2013 with the roof open. Late fall I think. It was really nice.

This is correct. The Minute Maid roof is used all the time to get sunlight to the grass. I've also been to many games when it opens in 8th - 9th inning after it cools down or for a firework show.

I suspect the reasoning for the NRG roof was mostly to grow natural turf as well. But even with the roof open the sides of the building were too tall to get enough sunlight to the playing surface. Remember how bad the grass used to look? Once they made the switch to artificial turf, there isn't much need to open the roof.

Terrible oversight by the architects.

Used to be open all the time as they felt heat was a competitive advantage. I sold beer from 02-04 and remember a Steelers games that was hot AF and some lady showed me her tlts to let her fill her turrble towel with ice. They weren't nice but no regrets.

Grass looked bad not due to lack of sunlight but because it was always installed and removed since Texans games are the one of the only event la there that needs grass. It was grown on big pallets.

Yeah, but the temperature must stay between 68.7 and 70.1 for the duration of the game . I've been to a couple games with the roof open in past years and it was fantastic. Complete joke that it's not open more often, especially for days like MNF against the Titans.

Yep must be SoCal weather with no chance of rain I guess. I believe there's an nfl rule where if the roof is open at the start it can't be closed.

Not in a long time you haven't. They haven't opened the root midgame since the mid 2000s. Once the last out is made they get it open for fireworks though

That's probably true. I have been to a lot of the fire work games lately for some reason. I must be remembering those.

Why not get a retractable roof stadium if you're an NFL owner. It's not like a city government is going to tell you, "No, I'm not going to force the taxpayers to swallow your load so you can brag."

Not true. It may be rare, but we mostly go to weeknight games and it's happened on occasion.

Even when NRG is open it still feels like a dome. The drop top was a big waste of money but it was the in thing at the time of construction

If I recall... Opposing teams complained when it would be opened during the game. It takes too long to open between innings or sides so it's still moving during play.
The Milkman

Correct. It would have to be done between innings and it takes too long for that. They would also need to contact the other dugout and get the other team would to agree to it in the middle of the game.

I know someone who knows someone who is married to someone who works for the Texans so I'm practically one of Cal McNair's kid's godparents. The roof motors are broken. The county doesnt want to pay to repair them and the Texans won't pay to repair them since they don't own the stadium.

Highly likely we can get the new motor funded with an email campaign in January to Judge Lina Hidalgo.

I say we cut our losses and weld the damn thing shut. Its not like it has an open air feel when the roof it open. Its a stadium version of a car sunroof.

I was at that game, it was over by the 1st half. They Steelers put up something like 30 points in the 1st half. I sweated Northgate while watching a tejano try to beat an 81 year old Steelers fans ass for no reason.
