Charitable organizations that really need to fundraise usually go as light as possible on event expenses. A lot of the "galas" are just thrown by for-profit event organizers who say they'll donate the "proceeds" to whatever. You go to one, you'll be on that event organizer's list forever. Anyone can get on their lists if you like throwing away a few hundred bucks to be photographed in your big boy clothes.
