where do you go?

Went to BB's on Tuesday. Usually pretty good but was disappointing in the size and thought the shells were way to flimsy (plus they dust the outside with spices).

Also bonus points if anyone knows a place that doesn't dust the outside with spices. That is an abomination!

Tell them to don't dust the crawfish with any of the seasoning.

Easy, right?

ya, except most don't boil them right so you end up with crawfish with no flavor. Dusting is a crutch for not letting them soak in the spicy boil water.

BB's is crap. Boil house on 11th is easily our favorite. 3 spice levels (go with the hottest), never dusted, always perfectly cooked.

Great size and 3 flavor options as well.

Also, they have a rewards program to give $10 off every 200 points (2 pts per dollar). Why it isnt 100 points and 1 per dollar I have no idea.

Two questions though
  • Anyone ever done their spicy challenge? I can't imagine ever eating crawfish that I would say are too spicy and I want to go do it. Edit: some research made me realize its a spicy pho challenge, not craw
  • Do you say it "La" or "L.A."

Are you joking? Boil House is terrible. Last time I went, they were completely out of the Vietnamese-style butter that makes crawfish so delicious.

There are some amazing Viet-Cajun style crawfish places going on in Houston these days.

I suggest you broaden your Louisiana-centric view of boiled crustaceans.

I live in that neighborhood. They are the best I have had and second place is not close.

I am hoping their new restaurant they are building will have a big outdoor seating area. I live eating bugs outside on pretty days in the Spring.

If you want Vietnamese style with the butter and garlic, check out Mike's Seafood on Hwy 6. That's our go to. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday is buy 5 lbs get 1 lb free. They are usually the least expensive too

I prefer the Cajun style boiled crawfish over the Viet-Cajun style.

My in laws had BB's catered Easter weekend and it was very good and the bugs were all big. My in laws are from Louisiana as were half the people there and it got their deal as well. They definitely get a slight knock for dusting after cooking, but it's not going to stop me from eating them

viet Cajun hating idiot that likes swamp water crayfish. Take your ass to Lafayette if you want terrible crayfish. Houston has elevated the crayfish scene and you seem to be stuck in the past.

Get some culture.

I have literally boiled crawfish with Tony Chachere's (doug) grand son and a guy from Kinder that ran track for LSU and was a DEA agent that worked with KiKi Camerena before he was killed.

And they both dusted their crawfish!

Cajuns love to run their mouths!

Tried the Viet-Cajun style this weekend at Crawfish and Noodles on Bellaire this weekend. I think I like it better than traditional Cajun. Delicious!

Lets get to the bottom of this.

When and where did this dusting crawfish begin?

It had to have been regional to somewhere and spread all over.

Post the year you first remember eating dusted crawfish and the location.

Early 1980s to ~2005, I remember no dusted crawfish. Crawfish was boiled and soaked for heat. If you wanted it hotter there was Crystal, Evangeline's or Louisiana hot-sauce on the side, or soak longer. No dust.

First encounter with dust was in Houston around 2005 or so and my reaction was wtf is the deal with this dust, who tf are these people, and wtf are they doing?

Dunno about dusting crawfish but I do know that I crop DUST after eating a lot of crawfish.

My theory is that it started with some restaurant (probably in a Houston suburb) doing all you can eat crawfish.

They were trying to turn out more crawfish then they could handle or didn't know what they were doing. Dust was born and somehow caught on.

Never seen dusted crawfish anywhere in Louisiana, and I lived and worked all over south La for years.

Now that I think about it, first time I had the dust was probably at Pappa's seafood in Houston.

May have been in the early 2000s.

So 2005 was wrong. It was probably earlier than that.

First time I had ever seen or heard of dusting crawfish was around 1990. Some friends down in Galveston did a boil with traditional seasoning in the water, then dumped them in an ice chest to steam, and dusted them with Tony's.

Doesn't have the restaurant anymore, but the owner still does boils on occasions at places. If you call they still have pick up options. He still caters for companies quite a bit.

On that note, if you do something at your work for crawfish like a social event, my company wont use anyone else for our internal and customer appreciation boils.

Edit: The Crawfish Man of Houston doesn't dust his stuff makes fun of people that do.
