They aren't supposed to end directly at the nips and they aren't supposed to be pointy at the end.

Anywho, I don't know if you have been looking at this thread, but Women are curvy and have shapes that are not 2d. People like to notice those curves. Without darts (or princess seams), shirts and dresses will be baggy and unflattering or scrunchy where they shouldn't be. Darts (and princess seams) (when done correctly) help the garment to mold over and flatter the body.
