Houston Rodeo Committee Recommendations

Any recommendations? I'd like to find a committee that involves community service and outreach. Some friends have shared their experiences and noted social-heavy events, which is great, but if there are any that involve more service-oriented groups that would be ideal. I understand that many committees may be full or difficult to get into.

Speakers Committee would be a good one. They basically go out to schools and speak to kids about what the rodeo means and does and get kids involved.

But you're right that most committees have their rosters set by now.

Recycling Comitee out reaches in to a lot of trash bins and always has 500 open spots

Agreed about Speakers, although they probably filled their roster months ago.

At what point in the year should one try and get on a committe?

Depends on the committee, but a lot of them you need to apply in May to get on the waitlist

I'm not sure exactly what you mean here. Most of the committees do the work of putting on the Houston Rodeo itself. There may be exceptions, like a couple of prestige committees that old people wait and wait to get on or people pay ridiculously high dues for . But most of the committees work on site. This isn't some sort of FLO or Big Event that sends you out into the community to "give back" or something.

If you're interested in working on HLS&R and able to commit to a shift schedule, there are one or two committees that are large enough to still take new sign ups. Rodeo Express is probably still taking some people, but I'd go ahead and join up for a basic membership and put in the committee request now.

I'm on Special Childrens, and love it, but our slots were filled a long time ago. Sounds like the OP is looking for something "off campus" and all our events are during the show, although Top Hands Horse Show is a couple weeks before hand, but still at NRG.

I have a leadership role on the Speakers Committee. We were soliciting new members before August, with rookie classes starting in September. You are too late.

We do go to elementary schools almost every Friday of the school year (but not during the rodeo) and give speeches on the Show, western heritage, agriculture, Texas history, etc. We also give speeches to business groups like the local Rotary or Kiwanis clubs and to church groups.

From time to time, we are also asked to judge barbecue cook offs or participate in various rodeo-related special events (such as the the rodeo parade or the Texas Bowl).

While we have had some changes, it is a fantastic committee to be on.

Not to derail the thread but I have wondered about this the past few years.
I've been considering getting involved with HLSR.
When is the best time to apply for comittees? I'm not necessarily looking for community outreach/service/off campus but more the committees that are actively involved in putting on the HLSR.

Any input /advice is appreciated.

The best time is right after the rodeo "season" is over, which I believe is May 1.

If you know anyone on a committee, I'd recommend talking with them about it as well as going out to the show with them and seeing committees in action and meeting people on different committees to help get a good idea of what would be a good fit for you

Would you mind posting your email/contact info? I would love to get in touch with you about this committee and re-connect in the summer.

Whatever committe you choose don't forget to go to Boot Town and buy your yearly costume for the rodeo so everyone knows you're a true country boy/girl

Hey guys and girls,

For anyone still looking to join a committee, I have openings. I am on RodeoExpress, and we are one of the largest committees at rodeo, so we usually have holes to fill. I happen to have several, and would love to have yall. I have recruited from TexAgs before, and it has usually worked great. I have also always tried to put TexAgs rookies on same teams.

In a nutshell, RodeoExpress is the committee that runs the buses from offsite locations (ie. Astroworld, Reed Rd, Smith Lands, and even the MetroRail), and brings patrons to/from the parking lots. Obviously there is a lot more to it, but if you're interested please let me know, and I would be happy to talk more with you about it.

As mentioned in a previous post, before joining any committee, your first step is go online and pay your rodeo membership dues. You can't be added to any committee without a membership number. You can do do with the link provided below.

If interested feel free to shoot me an email and I will get back with you.

Thanks,
Marcos
