+1 for Holy Rosary

My father and his siblings have been attending Holy Rosary since they were kids. I've been going there since I was born and really appreciate the traditional approach to the mass. If you want to go to a place that everyone hugs and holds hands then Holy Rosary probably isn't the place for you. But if you want a place that cares about traditional
Catholic teaching and beliefs then check it out.

Like I said earlier, Annunciation is my parish but I can't say enough good things about the priests at Holy Rosary. The Dominicans, especially Fr Chris, are some of the most caring priests I've ever met. Also, there's a lot of great families there you will want to get to know

That was what stood out to me about Annunciation and Holy Rosary back in the day; the priests did care and weren't merely perfunctory.

Have you checked out Our Lady of Walsingham? Lot of folks like you over there.

I have not. But I just looked it up. Definitely Interested in attending a mass there.

I'm a member of Our Lady of Walsingham. If you're visiting, I suggest the 11:15 high mass. Get there early and spend some time visiting the courtyard and the shrine. Walsingham is the cathedral for the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter so there's a good chance Bishop Lopes will be celebrating mass. The chancery is also worth walking through if it's open.

I hate to say "not nice" things about any church, so don't take this wrong...as a former St. Anne's parishioner...I was bored out of my mind there.

No offense to anyone. Just wasn't my cup of tea.

My grandmother and some other family members have gone back and forth between annunciation and holy rosary over the years. Both great parishes.

Can you explain what was boring & where you now go that's not? I don't think anyone should be offended by what you said, just curious as to the boring part so people can point you to a different parish.

I'm not in Houston anymore, so it's a moot point. I'll just say that I've been to Catholic churches mu whole life, so I understand the terrain. Just attended too many masses where I didn't feel a real connection to it. Almost like going through the motions. Wife and I have a habit of always discussing mass or a sermon after the fact. Many times we would literally have no idea how the messages tied together. Different strokes I guess. Our kids godparents swear by St. Annes.

sounds like you should try a protestant church instead.

We go to Christ the Redeemer - we're in northwest Houston. Really enjoy it.

Another vote for St. Anne's

We live out in the Lake Houston area now but still drive to St. Anne for mass. Besides the beauty of the church and quality of the music they have a very well thought out and organized system. I like the traditional approach they have with mass and don't try to jazz it up. I find the sermons to be very personal and cause for self reflection. I also like that the Father's aren't in danger of being moved somewhere else like a lot of the other churches I have attended. This lets you really make a connection with them and the staff.

I just converted back in April and did RCIA there. The group was very diverse in age, race, and background and I didn't find it all to be a bunch of uppity River Oaks people. I also got married there and did my marriage classes/retreats there so I have a good understanding of what the parish as a whole is like.

I also like that the church is smaller and not one of these mega ones that are popping up all over the place. There is a greater sense of community there and plenty of different ways to get involved.

I just have a strong preference for more traditional music and hymns.

  • To quote Jim Gaffigan, Holy Rosary is for Shiite Catholics (not knocking it, but I did get married there and I have the scars from the shrill church lady to prove it)
  • Fr. Wayne Wilkerson is at St. Michael now (came from St. Bart in Katy took over in what I believe to be the scandalous departure of the previous St. Michael pastor) and I always thought he was an excellent pastor for his flock.

Read The Lamb's Supper by Scott Hahn and you'll never view the mass the same way again. It discusses how the liturgy is designed to imitate on Earth how God is worshipped in Heaven as described in Revelation. After I read it, attending a mass with an uninspired homily or terrible music wasn't so bad because the liturgy itself had become so much more meaningful.

I lived downtown for four years, and I loved the Co Cathedral. I think a lot of people overlook the fact that it's a parish in addition to being the Cathedral for the Archdiocese. My wife went through RCIA there, and while it doesn't have the reputation, I can confirm from that experience that it's pretty Orthodox. I don't expect that to change as long as Cardinal DiNardo is there.

I should also mention that both the parish rector and his wife are Aggies, c/o '04 and '03.

It was Sacred Heart parish originally before it became the Co Cathedral. Bishop Fiorenza was the parish priest way back in the 60's.
