What if I want my kids to have a great education and not get piety and old priest weenurs shoved down their throats?

At least my wife is catholic, so I guess I could just grit my teeth and deal with it.

No matter where you live in Houston-ISD, you can apply to any school in the district. So if you don't like Waltrip or whatever you're zoned to, then you can apply to whatever other school you might like. Plus there are non-zoned schools you can apply to (e.g. HSPVA, Carnegie). I know many kids who live zoned to one school but attend another school outside their zone; it's not unusual at all.
This may be true, but many of the more popular / better schools are severely limited or outright closed off for magnet students because they are over capacity with just kids in their zone. At least that is what I am seeing with elementary schools. West U elementary has even warned parents to register early because they may not have enough room to accommodate all the kids within their zone.

If you're looking in the loop, you can't go wrong with First Presbyterian (across from museum of fine arts), AOS (near Montrose and 59), or River Oaks Baptist (in River Oaks) for elementary/middle school. These schools send the majority of their kids to the top high schools: Strake Jesuit, St. Johns, Kinkaid, St. Agnes, Episcopal, St. Thomas. And the best Catholic elementary/middle schools are probably St. Vincent's (West U area), St. Michael's (Galleria area), St. Anne's (Westheimer/Shepherd), and St. Cecilia's (Memorial).
If you want to try Pres, ROB or AOS, you need to start looking into it yesterday, because they are becoming increasingly hard to get into and have strict guidelines for when to apply. I know that they have already completed applications and interviews for the 2016-17 school year. Check around for the best "entry points" because there may be only a handful of spots during a certain year and much more in other years when they increase the number of classes.

All three of these schools have different priorities that are given to legacies, siblings and church members. ROB is probably the most restrictive since they have been around the longest, so they have a LOT of legacy applications. They also have a large congregation. AOS is seeing more as legacy parents' kids are reaching school age. Pres will get there soon.

Don't skimp on private school, unless you want your kids snorting baking soda.

BS. Find the school that matches your child's ability and your expectations and budget. Too many parents send their snowflake to a school above their kid's level and can't understand why they struggle and dislike school.

St. John's is a great school, but I'd never send my daughter there. Like our education at A&M, we feel there is more to an education than pure academics and hours of homework. My wife works at one of the schools on the list (not St. John's) and we wouldn't send our daughter there either.

I think it was a joke about your kid snorting coke that's been cut rather than pure if you send them to a second rate private school.

The rich kids had lots of money and no supervision. They're also cute when they pretend to be hard asses.

Unless I can convince my wife to move, I'm going to be looking at private schools in a few years.

Take a look at the methodology: https://k12.niche.com/rankings/private-high-schools/best-overall/methodology/

75% of their data was self-reported by "Niche users," a site most of us have never heard of (hey quick! Let's go load their site with feedback promoting our own alma maters!)
