Howdy,

I'm a big astronomy geek, and I'd like to get my own telescope some day. I'm not particularly looking to buy just yet, but I'd like to start getting educated on quality telescopes so I know what to look for in the future.

There was actually a place suggested to me a long time ago, and it may have been Land, Sea, & Sky Co.. However, I also want to say that might have been mentioned as the wrong place to go if you're looking for someone knowledgeable and quality equipment. Does anyone have any experience with them or another good telescope shop?

Side note: has anyone ever been to the George Observatory in Brazos Bend State Park? How was the experience?

Went out to Brazos Bend a long time ago. Check it out if your interested in the hobby. They have different kinds of programs and events throughout the year.

Thanks for the recommendation. I hope to get to go there and actually use the Observatory telescopes. That would be fantastic.

Houston Astronomical Society. They even have a "dark site" near Columbus you can use if you join.

Yeah, when I went, there was a sizable crowd so everybody got a turn to go up and look through the big guy.

There actually is a "geek store" on 19th or 20th, but I think it's more for LOLOMG stuff.

There is one in off of Wertheimer at the beltway and one at TC Jester. Avoid the TC Jester location because its right next to Crazy Billy's Atomic Wedgie World.

Nerdz rool.

But seriously, space and astronomy are amazing and something I get really enthusiastic about. Nothing cooler than the mindblowing discoveries outside of our world.

Land Sea and Sky if you catch the right person. Some of them are excellent optics guys but not exactly versed in messier or New General Catalogue. They've been my go-to for nearly 2 decades for service . Also a member of the Houston and Fort Bend astronomical clubs and they have a lot of guys that would be happy to talk your ear off and let you check out their set ups. Or at least that's how it used to be, I haven't been active in years.

Tonight would have been the best night for you. The astronomical society of Houston is having novice night at the observatory to show you the ropes. It happens periodically, just check for the next one.
