Have heard it two ways recently when getting directions. San Fah-lee-pay and San Filleh-pee. Which is it?

Only yankees say San Filleh-pee

It is a spanish name and the spanish pronunciation should be used

Seems like Filleh-pee has always been the Houstonian way...like its the one street we refuse to pronounce correctly just because that's the way its always been.

San Fah-lee-pay. Born and raised. Never heard it any other way except from a transplant.

I too had always heard that the second way was the "real Houstonian way" and know several blue blood old school River Oaksians that pronounce it that way. I think its dumb and usually pronounce it the normal Spanish way.

Fifth generation Houstonian here, there is one correct way to pronounce the street name, and that's San Filleh-pee.

Many Texas words were Anglicized/Americanized after Texas independence. The pronunciation of San Felipe the street is closer to the pronunciation of 'Philip'.

For those who insist on changing the pronunciation of place names back to the correct Spanish, do you also say that you live in Tehas and plan on visiting the San Hacinto monument this weekend?

Native Houstonian here: Mostly heard "San Phillip-Eee" growing up. At some point the local news stations decided to go all ethno-accent-sensitive and it's mostly San Fuh-lee-pay now.

As far back as the 1960s (prob before), it was:

Sayn Fill-a-pee. Wrong, but ingrained.

San Fill-eep is right, I believe.

But then, like a dumbass, I took French.

The town of San Felipe, just east of Sealy, is pronounced San FillUp. At least from the whites and probably the blacks.

It's properly pronounced Fa-LEEP-eh.

The tanglewood crowd will often go with FILL-ip-eee but that's just b/c they are bluebloods and don't want to live off a street with a mexican name.

Same here. I, and most other native Houstonians I know have always said "Feh-lee-pay" but I have heard several others say "Fill-eep".

I can't remember hearing anyone calling it San "Filleh-pee"

I grew up in Clear Lake and I always heard it and said it as "few-kway"
