How long do you want to ignore this user?
Hey guys,

I've accepted a job in the Energy Corridor and will be commuting from The Woodlands area.
I understand that there are better options out there but this is the reality that I'll be facing.

What kind of commute times should I expected? I've been using the Houston Transtar website.

These two links show approximate commute times taking I45-BW8-I10:
Going to work at 6:30am
Leaving work at 5:30pm

These show commut times taking I45-610-I10
Going to work at 6:30am
Leaving at 5:30pm, wouldn't let me take I-45

Are these times accurate? If not, what should I expect?

Depending when you leave, you should expect it to take 45 minutes to 1.5 hours.

So 45 minutes is a possibility if I leave at 6:15 or so?

Depending on where you are in The Woodlands, probably. But it fluctuates. Daily.

I mean, a wreck is one thing but what does fluctuates mean?

When I did it for over a year and a half if ranged from 40 minutes to over 2 hours. Traffic, weather, wrecks, people who can't and don't drive. It really depends. I carpooled from 45 and 2920.

Ok thanks for your help

Double posts. It wasn't a bad drive 90% of the time, it was the 10% that killed me.

Understood. It's really that bad 10% of the time? Dang...

One time from the energy corridor to the woodlands I didn't go over 15 miles per hour the entire way. Buy that was the exception. But it can happen any day of the week too.

That is one of the worst commutes in Houston. Literally right up there with fairfield to downtown. You should wake up and kick yourself in the weiner every morning. Actually mornings should not be that bad at 6ish. 5:30 PM from EC to woodlands is 1:30 on a good day.

IH45 to Beltway 8 to IH10....rinse and repeat.

Hopefully should be 45 minutes at the very max most days. Turn it on 740 (KTRH) and enjoy some Michael Berry. It will make your commute go by much faster.

I make the reverse drive and the only place beltway 8 gets congested is at 45 exits.

I go from 45@1960 to Westchase via BW8. If I leave at 6:45 or earlier, it takes 45 minutes. But, I don't have to get on I-10. Those lanes after the toll both are quite a bit slower. Not sure how long that takes to get through.

And, as someone already mentioned, the 5 o'clock commute sucks more.

Whatever you do, do NOT think that 1960 is superior to the freeways on normal days.

If you can leave early (before 615) you will be fine on the commute.

Coming home is a different ballgame. If I leave the office after 415, I'm screwed. Worst part being between I10 and first tollbooth, then again at 249, then massive cluster at 45 or Hardy.

Certain lanes move faster than others. Left lane until the first tollbooth, then swing to the right lanes right after 290, then back to the left lanes just before 249.

Again, leave before 415.

Understood. A standard workday would be 7:30-5:30, if I leave for work early I could do 6:30-4:30. I figure that may be a little better. At least leaving at 4:30 would mean I'd be home by 6 rather than 7.

Right?

45 minutes strikes me as unrealistic. Maybe from Woodlands Parkway & I-45 to I-10 & Eldridge at 6AM on Christmas morning...

Count on about 1 hr 15 minutes in any kind of traffic.

Good luck and congrats on the job. I'd start searching for a house closer to work as well.
