Fung's may fit the bill. Scott Chen had empress of china way up north and his fancy place on San Felipe (more French than Chinese in a fusion style) but those are long gone.

Fu's Garden in West U/Rice Village and a second one on San Felipe in the same shopping center at Southwell's. I generally feel Chinese is Chinese, all pretty much the same, but if I need to sit down and order off a menu for Chinese, that place is solid.

Fus is, in my opinion, just decent Chinese American fare. Good at what it does. Not what I want. I want lobster dishes and whole fish dishes. Fung's may fit the bill.

To each their own. I don't really do 'nice' Chinese food. If I want nice and 'Asian', sushi is the deal for me. No need to dress up and sit down for sesame chicken. I will for freshwater eel and flying fish roe.

No problem. If you are in the area, fu fu, Mala Sichuan, hong king street food, hk dim sum, all on bellaire would offer better "cheap Chinese" food than fu's garden.

I am not interested in Japanese sushi recommendations, but thanks. I think I have a decent handle on that.

I'm just trying to find an upscale version of the great everydau lunch places on bellaire.

Nice Chinese (for me) - Sushi, Pei Wei, PFChangs

Outside of that, if I'm eating Chinese, I was some cheap $5.95 Mongolian beef of sesame chicken.

Thanks, I guess.

I am not getting the 5.95 dish comments on a thread requesting "upscale", but it's texags. Where is the Timmy chan rec?

That's why I said Asian, not Chinese. I know Chinese is not sushi, but if I want cuisine from that region of the world, I just bypass china and go Japan.

Didn't even think of PF Changs or Pei Wei, PF Changs Is the ribs choice for Chinese.

The next time someone asks for the best BBQ place, be sure to chime in with "I like cheese enchiladas. When I want food from that region of the world, I skip Tex and go straight to Mex"

THE best Chinese food in Houston. No other place remotely comes close. The food is always EXCELLENT. The owner, Carol, remembers every person's name and face after just one visit. Its the most amazing thing you'll ever see.

China Garden is the best in Town, been going for 20+ years. If you can get Frank as your waiter even better.

Huynh is fantastic (having lunch there tomorrow) but I wouldn't call it upscale.

I really like Qin Dynasty on Buffalo Spdwy and Westpark. Fairly pricy at night, but lunch specials are in the $7-8 range for the same food.

I like Huynh also, but didn't ask for best, asked for upscale. Atmosphere was part of request.

I get pounded on for bringing up sushi as my preference if I am going to eat food of the Asian persuasion in an upscale atmosphere, but Vietnamese can be brought into the discussion all willy nilly. They are as far apart or more than Chinese and Japanese
