Also, it bears recognizing that, evidently, the OP walking over to the window was enough to "scare away" the Jason Bourne/PCP freak/Bane super-burglar.

Tasco-Just like schmellba99 mentioned, you're going to be overwhelmed with fear, so why do you want to make it more difficult to protect yourself, family, and friends? You must be an excellent shot under tremendous stress, and have the ability to place a round that will not terminate the criminal. What’s your choice of shot placement? A kneecap, wrists, Achilles’ heel? Or do you just shoot the gun outta their hands? Maybe you can help us all with making “that” shot under extreme pressure. But then again, all would be intruders will run away if you just show your presence.

Even if you have kids, you can be safe by leaving a round in the chamber, and there are many ways you can achieve this. However, you appear to demand the posters of TexAgs go out and buy you some gizmo and hand it to you on a bright shiny platter that you saw at the needless market.

OP needs to hit his FIL up. As a father to a couple of daughters, I'd gladly give one of my handguns to ensure their safety.

THIS! The old man will pony up a free handgun to you. He'll probably even let you pick it out.

And fwiw, I don't keep a round chambered in my pistol. I've never been in the butthole clinching situation descibed in this thread, but I'm positive that I'm competent enough to rack one as soon as I grab my gun out of the fingerprint activated safe in the bedside table. If I need it faster than that, ie, the intruder is a few feet away and closing in as I wake up, I'm likely properly fudged anyway.

I recommend going to the Outdoor Board to learn more about guns. Use the search function before you start a thread.

Where did I advocate shooting to wound?

WTF does this mean? And is "Tasco" supposed to be some obscure insult or are you just pants-on-head retarded?

Seriously who the hell are you and why do you insist on highjacking every thread with random nonsense? For the love of God will the mods please ban this troll?

Everyone is different, but my personal opinion is why have the gun if it isn't loaded with a round chambered. I don't want to risk having something go wrong with loading or chambering a round in the dark. I used to keep a shotgun loaded (buckshot) behind the closet door in my bedroom.

I don't have a gun in the house at the moment (too hard for me to get a license and gun here in Australia plus it isn't ghetto like Houston), but when we move back to the US I'll go back to the loaded shotgun approach. I'll probably put the gun inside the closet above the doorframe like a friend of mine used to do. I like the idea of the fingerprint safe in the nightstand as well for a pistol - will check that out as well.

This. Personally, I keep a shotgun in the closet loaded, chambered, and safety on. I keep a semi-auto handgun in my nightstand that is loaded, chambered, with the safety off. It is just my wife and I here, she knows how to operate most of the guns that we own, the safety off thing is just personal preference.
