I love Irma's in downtown, although that place never shows up on any of these lists. (the real Irma's, not the Southwest Grill)

I'll have to give it a try. I like the idea of incorporating the salsa into the tortilla.

Agreed. I work right around the corner from that taco truck. I will have to go by there this week. Lord knows its going to be a slow week.

The neighborhood may be a bit on the poor side, but it is far from one of the worst in the city. Its actually not that dangerous, just poor. Most of the people are workers, and hard workers at that, just not making a bunch of money. I never feel threatened over there going to or from work. When I worked at the corner or Crosstimbers/Fulton by 45, I was genuinely afraid driving down the road.

I biked that intersection (Fulton/Crosstimbers/45) yesterday, as I've done many times. Other than crazy drivers trying to run me over, no big deal. Crosstimbers does have a marked bike lane.
At Polk/Cullen is the intersection of 2 marked bike lanes - no big deal with drivers there or with "safety". Agree with the comment that it's not high income, but certainly not a big deal.

Definitely not gringos; had folks tell me it was good, tried it for the first time yesterday and it was not good

some ideas:
Guadalapana in Montrose - basic stuff but home-made, good pastry counter
Gallo de Jalisco on White Oak - but only if grandma is cooking (hard to tell when that is)
Hugo's - everything from fresh ceviche to fried crickets
Irma's - tex-mex done well
El Real - not much love on this board, but I enjoy it
Aracely - taco truck on Irvington & Cavalcade, home-made tortillas & good pastor
Villa Arcos on Navigation - great breakfast tacos
Tampico on Airline - nice snapper a la plancha
Tampico Refresqueria on N.Main - good licuados/smoothies
El Bolillo on Airline - full-service bakery

Go try Alma Latina on Shepherd in the Heights, go on Tuesdays and have the tampiquena special, the breakfasttacos are also solid. Also on Shepherd there in the heights there is a Fiesta, right next to it, there is a taco truck, Don Tin, I think, go try the tacos dorados!

If you go to Villa Arcos make sure to try the Super Bacon taco. It's super bacon-y.

I'm pretty sure a lot of these places could serve a seasoned dog turd wrapped in a tortilla and it'd be recommended as outstanding Mexican food so long as it wasn't well known or not a chain around here.
