Been a year since we lost our dog of 14 years (which we adopted from an animal shelter).

Family is ready to adopt a new dog and am wondering if there are any shelters in town with better policies/more choices than others?

We'll probably be looking for a dog that is aged puppy to young; no specific breed preference (we like mutts); would stay away from the Pitt Bulls and similar, and probably will be looking for a dog that would be medium size as an adult.

We are considering adopting now so that the kids can spend more time with the dog during Christmas break. But during this time, do the number of dogs available to adopt drop a lot?

Thanks Ags.

Trust me, there is always a HUGE supply. Check Petfinder.com. They sponsor ads for local shelters and animal rescue groups.

Houston Collie Rescue is always looking for a good home for a few rescule collies.

We got ours from Twyla's Friends out of the Kingwood/Humble area, but we found the dog through Petfinder.com.

I would recommend using the search function on petfinder to find the specific type of dog you are looking for.

I know of a German Shepherd Mix that is in need of a home. I live on a road where good pups and adults show up regularly. I think we have taken at least 5 last year to shelters or people that will take them and the neighbors have done the same. Im sure many get euthanized, but I think thats better than the life they are destined to lead otherwise.

Anyway, this is a young shepherd mix abandoned on our road that needs a home. It is a friendly unneutered male.

My neighbor had to take him to the vet since they didn't want him with their dogs without knowing if he had any parasites. Turned out he had none. He is 9-10 months old. Loves people & dogs, not aggressive to cats. Always wants to be with someone. Since he is a puppy, has all the puppy training issues. Quick learner. No collar, no microchip.

If you are interested, Ill post a pic. I am at work and they filter all pic hosting sites so I can't put it up right now. he's a good lookin' dog.

petfinder.com is a great resource. Thanks Ags.

BrazosDog02: Appreciate the heads up but the wife would most likely veto a German Shepard mix.

I'm partial to the Australian Shepherd/Border Collie/Lab mixes. But my kids will make the final call with the wife and I holding veto power over any choice.

We foster for Buster's Friends a lot. They will for sure have a ton of adoptions, and places set up all over the city for adoptions with the Holidays. Buster's Friends is set up in Uptown Park and have dogs of all shapes, sizes, ages, and breeds. The SPCA always has dogs for adoption at the Galleria at Christmas, usually around the Neiman's area. I would start there, but there is sure to be more than ample opportunity for you to find a dog around the holidays.

There was some bad press regarding Noah's Ark a year or 2 back, supposedly not truly being no kill.

I got my most recent pup from www.bigdogshugepaws.com

Might be more than you want tho.....

We had a great experience with Second Chance German Shepherd Rescue. I know you specifically said your wife didn't want a GSD but in case anyone else reading is interested. They have mixes and pure GSDs and were great.

The Houston Beagle Rescue was very easy to work with too when we found a lost beagle a few years ago - we ended up giving her to Ryan the Temp instead of placing her in their system but I was very impressed all the same.
