quote:
Somewhere between sucking on the heads of Vietnamese-Cajun crawfish and licking clean a plate of Mexican-style roasted goat and house-made tortillas, I wondered: Is Houston's multicultural dining scene the country's best-kept food secret? I knew the city has its share of good Mexican, solid BBQ, and cool places with big-name chefs at the stove. But I didn't expect to find strip malls filled with the best Southeast Asian food I've ever eaten, Indian-inspired chicken wings that won a spot in my bar food hall of fame, or a $14 value meal of pig's-ear cake and braised pork cheeks. Who knew that, dish after dish, I'd be scribbling "Wish I could get this back home!" in my notebook?

Starchefs put together a pretty good list.

Not sure categorizing RDG as "tex-mex" is very accurate though.

How TQLA is making it on to all of these lists is beyond me. It's a glorified Taco Milagro.

Whenever I'm asked by someone what I enjoy about living in Houston and I cite the food as one thing they always come back with "ah, yeah great Mexican/BBQ?"...

I then have to explain how crazy the food scene is as a whole as I get the impression they still really don't believe me.

I think most Houstonians can get better BBQ at home or at a friends. I never go out to eat BBQ because it's never as good as what my dad makes.

Houston has decent BBQ. The vast majority of it is OK but not outstanding like you get in Luling, Lexington, or Llano (what is it with the "L" towns?).

What Houston does have is a diverse food scene which, when it comes to the sheer number of varieties and quality at every price level is second only to NYC in the US.

Chicago has it's celeb chefs doing molecular gastronomy and some really high level stuff but they don't have near the variety of Houston. It's probably more top-heavy than Houston when it comes go great restaraunts (i.e.- more high-end joints) but they don't have the ridiculous number of small family places from every conceivable country or ethnicity that we do.

Basically, there are cities that are better in specific categories but overall Houston is better than all of them except NYC.

In Houston you are always within 5 miles of Vietnamese place serving Bahn Mi, a drink, and a fried eggroll for less than $5. That rules.
