BTW, I never met a single kid from River Oaks while I did my sentence at Lamar. I'm sure there were a few - it's a big place.

Buck,

Say what you want and rephrase your comments, but I think you completely missed the boat on what you said.

I'd like to thank nnichols for demonstrating the elitist condescending attitude that my wife are concerned about regarding Kincaid and St John's. Slim chance we send our kids there when someone involved with the school starts running smack instead of answering a straightforward question asked by a fellow Ag.

nnichols simply wants everyone to know he lives in River Oaks, but has lived in the villages (and West U, and the Med center, and Tanglewood, and anywhere else you might think is cool), he's a member at every CC in Houston, blahblahblahblah.

Thats all guys, he's just trying to help.

There's a SLIM chance anybody is going to send a kid there even if they love the schools. They have about a 15% acceptance rate from a very strong applicant pool. Its simply not a realistic option for most people. Those are schools to which you apply, but have a couple of more likely fall-back options open in the likely event that you are wait-listed.

I stopped reading anything mnichols said when I read his comments about Episcopal. He's living in the past.

Regarding HISD. I would love for them to revise the magnet program. Lamar would be a great option if they returned it to a neighborhood school instead of the 3500 student school it's become.

The IB program at Lamar and the AP program at Bellaire are the equal of St. Johns.

Tap the breaks there a bit. Those are both great programs but certainly not on par with one of the best schools in the state (nor should one expect them to be).

Went back and looked at the numbers from 2000-2006.

For private schools: SJS averaged 50 NMSF, Kinkaid averaged 14 NMSF, Strake averaged 13 NMSF, St Agnes averaged 10 NMSF, DASH averaged 3, SBS averaged 2.5 NMSF, & EHS averaged 2.1 NMSF. Maroon, EHS was shutout for NMSF in 2010. Just FYI

For Public Schools: Bellaire averaged 45 NMSF, MHS averaged 15 NMSF, Lamar averaged 10 NMSF, HSPVA averaged 6, and Stratford averaged 3

pretty impressive for Saint John's.

I wonder how large their average class is?

A typical graduating class for Lamar, by comparison, is between 700 and 900 kids.

Even if you took the top 140-150 kids from Lamar, you could not match SJS. However, I think a realistic goal for Lamar ought to be matching Bellaire & Memorial. The only way I see that happening is to slightly shrink the attendance zone so that it does not extend east of Main Street. Frankly, I'm not quite sure where they get their 40%+ economically disadvantaged kids from. Most of the attendance zone is very affluent.

Is there some hidden ghetto I'm not aware of within the Lamar attendance zone (other than east of Main Street)?

Buck - lookin' at the attendance map.
some funky areas just south of I-10 & west of Shepherd.
add in OST area, parts of Montrose (between Richmond & 59) far eastern edge of Montrose, lots of garage apts throughout....plus HISD is open enrollment meaning kids can come from all over town.

The northern end of south post oak and south of westheimer (multiple family units) ate predominately EDH.

The threemost impressive in terms of students qualifying as a % of total class are SJS and kinkaid. Those are the two schools that average 10%+ NMSF. (St johns is mid 30's)

St Johns is a f-ing factory.

They churn out something like 25% Ivy League. TAMU and UT (maybe even Rice, lol) are safety schools for those fools.
