They are tearing up the parking lot, I was wondering if anyone knows what the plans are for that place.I guess its about time, that theater has been closed for years.

Yeah, I noticed that the other day. Hopefully it will be something good.

i asked lucille at the cleaners next to the liquor store - its gonna be a Kohls. i'd been hoping for a bookstore - poors dont read and they might go away. what that strip needs is a new poblano's - the nearest decent mexican is el ranchero and thats just to far for houston.

Better pack some heat in that area.

Good ol Lucille, does she know you by name too? It is nice not having to worry about dry cleaning tickets.

Kohls huh, well that will be nice for about a week. At least they are doing something, it is a nice big shopping center but half the space is empty.

What that entire strip center really needs is to be leveled, and replaced with a ginormous HEB and Spec's.

I loved that amc before it got thoed. And no, you don't need to pack heat in "that area," unless you're the type to piss your pants whenever you see a normal middle class person who happens to be non-white, in which case you're probably going to shoot your nuts off fumbling for the safety while trying to lock the doors for a third or fourth time, so I say go for it.

The movie theater just started drawing people in from other neighborhoods once they realized that their were no cars worth robbing at Plitt 5 anymore.

Son of a...I forgot about that place. I remember the first movie I saw at the Meyer Park theater..."Ernest Goes to Camp." I was in fourth grade. The theater was practically brand new, and it really was nice inside.

I've made a few midnight runs to that Wal Mart recently, since moving into "that area." No problems at all, haven't been worried in the least.

i used to live at stella link and bellfort. on the surface it appears ghetto, but it was actually a decent area.

The slow creep of gentrification has spilled over from Meyerland and hit that area. 5-10min. commutes to the med center get noticed eventually.

I'm surprised something is finally moving in. Looks like Wolff has finally loosened up on the rent a bit, or Kohl's just doesn't mind paying that much.

I don't see it lasting too long. I just don't see the middle-class people shopping there, since they'd just go to the Galleria area or First Colony area and make a day of it, and the lower-class people will tear it up like they've done to that Walmart.

The area isn't a bad area at all. Lived there all my life and never for a second felt like I was in danger. However, I think it will be a long time, if ever, before that area can sustain a viable shopping district. For the everyday items, people go to Meyerland and for good shopping people go to the Galleria.

I do hope more restaurants start moving in though. I hated having to drive to the Fountains or to the 59 corridor to find a decent restaurant, especially once Chili's and Casa Ole left the Meyer Park area.

weird, I asked Lucille that same question when I dropped off my dry cleaning this morning.

That Chili's was the most thoed I'd ever been to. We had to walk out a couple of times because we were ignored in the bar area by the waitstaff talking on their cell phones. I don't think we matched the preferred clientele. It needed to go.

I couldn't believe the Casa Ole on S. Post Oak closed. I didn't think that those places ever closed. At least no one is touching Cue's Burgers. That place is an institution and should be patronized (owner is big supporter of community and Police Dept.).

But if Chili's and Casa Ole is your standard for "good restaurants", then I don't know what to tell you.

Meyerland has about a million restaurants of all varieties - Los Tios, Escalante's, Beck's, Guglianos (Collinas), NY Pizzeria, Fadi's - what exactly is wrong with all of those? There is also a ton along Bellaire / Holcombe, which is "in the area".

Without having a clue as to that specific center, it's not atypical at all for big-box retailers like Kohl's to pay virtually zero rent for a while. The owner/developer will basically pay for the big-box anchor tenant to come in as they drive traffic for the center and all the secondary tenants pay the beau-coup dollares in rent.

At a center to remain nameless, I was told by the CEO of the development company that the deal a high-profile retail store got to come into their center was:
2 years free rent
developer paid for/performed 100% of the tenant build-out
developer paid for the initial stocking of retailer's merchandise

I didn't realize Wolff had bought Meyer Park.

On the neighborhood, the single family homes around there are and have always been mostly white middle class. Like all neighborhoods, it's gone through cycles as families age and come and go. The overbuilding of cheap apartments just before the bust has had a negative effect on the whole area for several years. But it is getting better, you guys should have seen the Link Valley apartments before they got dozed. At one point, there was a community volunteer cleanup of the fields around the complex - I skipped but heard it was a bonanza of used syringes, prophylactics, and spent ammunition.

Great to see i'm not the only one that chats up Lucille. She knows all and she/her family have the worst luck. Every time I go in there its another sob story. But she has a smile and great attitude despite.... Anyway, thanks for sharing the info.

Now they are tearing up the parking lot in front of Luby's, all kinds of progress going on!

According to Lucille, it will be a new Luby's

If memory serves, that Luby's was one of the few original businesses that stayed there.

Annie's Burgers was good...but Cue's Burgers was the BEST! It warms my heart to see people talking about the nice -turned super ghetto-turning nice again area that i grew up in! I would love to live in the Meyerland Area, but WOW...it is crazy how expensive those small >2000sq ft. homes are going for.

Westbury Class of 96' yeaah yeaaa!

the hood's been great - we've been there for 4.5 years and have enjoyed it. its sort of a secret spot in town. what we'd love is a decent Onion Creek type spot, but the demographics just cant support it yet...

We've been in Westbury (back up the easement that runs from S. Posk Oak to W Bellfort) for 7 years now and love it. S Post Oak is still gettoish looking in spots, but has improved over the last few years, albeit slowly. If they would just get rid of the apartments at the corner of S. Post Oak and Willowbend, I would be thrilled.

We also were told that a Kohl's was going in but hearing that a new Luby's is being built is new information. We also heard (completely unsubstantiated) that a Super Walmart would be going in the center as well. Given how much I hate the existing Walmart (won't set foot in it... just drop the 'rib at the door and sit in the back of the parking lot until she's ready to be picked up), I can only imagine I will hate a Super Walmer a super amount.

Cue's is freaking money although I don't get there as much as I would like as I don't feel like having to buy a new wardrobe b/c of the expansion my gut would have. Losing Poblano's (now Fajita Pete's over on Bellaire) was a HUGE loss as their fajitas were money and much cheaper than Lupe's. El Ranchero is pretty damn solid when I want some greasy-spoon type Mexican food.

I also heard it was a khol's coming in from Lucille. Lucille is a great person. I took my dry cleaning in there one time and when I came back to pick it up she handed me the $300 cash that I had left in the pocket of on pair of pants. Somehow I had forgotten all about it. I gave her $200 of it. It's hard to find those types of people.

The Lubys is going in front, and the Kohls is going in where the movie theater was
