Speeding ticket in a small town...

Got a speeding ticket in Elgin 2 weekends ago. Officer claims he clocked me doing 65 in a 50 but there's no way. Conveniently, that knocks it up to a $250 fine. I also got pinched for expired inspection sticker. Since it is over 2 months expired, that cannot be dismissed and will cost me $130. My question is what happens if you just say screw it and do nothing. Does a warrant go out for your arrest strictly in that county (Bastrop) or state wide? It was local law enforcement...not state. Anyone know?

I can only speak from experience. I got a speeding ticket in a small town in West Texas several years ago and I do not have any statewide warrants that I know of and I have been pulled over several times since then. I'm sure AOE or somebody else on here knows what the actual law is.

Pay it... It will save you trouble later down the road. (I know from experience)

It's not only the money, but the time. They make it a pain in the ass to correspond with this particular precinct office. I would contest it if it was in Houston b/c i know i was doing at least 4-5 mph less than 65. I just wanted to see if anyone had experience with this type of thing and what the implications/consequences were. I will definitely pay it if statewide warrants go out. Otherwise, i will just make sure to watch my speed in Bastrop County.

It will probably be statewide, but I doubt someone would want to transfer you across a couple counties for a couple hundred dollar warrant.

They will also block you from renewing your drivers license.

I thought a warrant was statewide and they could collect anywhere because it is then a state thing, not county. (could be wrong, just wondering)

Yeah, it is a shakedown, but you're better off paying it before they issue a warrant.

Had the same thing happen to me going through Riesel on my way from CS to Ft. Worth. Got popped for 71 in a 45 (I was in a hurry and until then had never seen a cop in Riesel). Also got tagged for the expired registration. I finally got around to paying it once I realized I had a warrant but didn't know if it was statewide. It is wasn't and wasn't going to turn into a statewide warrant I paid $1100 for nothing as I haven't been in that sh*t hole town since.

thanks for the info guys.

AOE, help a brotha out...i have always been a big supporter of the force, just not small towns trying to fund their city by shaking down the out-of-towners.

from the reverse side of the ticket...

quote:
failure to comply with your written promise to appear in court as made on this citation will result in warrants being issued for your arrest...making you subject to entry into the wanted persons files of this department

this doesn't worry me.

quote:
failure to appear in court or failure to satisfy a judgment ordering payment of a fine and cost in the manner ordered by the court may result in the denial or renewal of your driver's license

this is what worries me. kind of BS that they can do this. i wonder, however, if that means denial of renewal in that particular county or if they can put a statewide block on it. looks like it is probably just worth it to pay and get it over with.

You got hooked by another arm of the scamming police. Yes, the City of Houston has similar rackets. Yes, you are better off paying it this time. That's how the Po-Po scams you - they make sure you are better off paying it.

Taking defensive driving cost very close to the same as paying a ticket.

you'd think someone with a name like "charles bronson" could take care of a small traffic problem.

It's statewide. I had the same issue in Snook back in college and didn't pay the thing.

Several years later there was a block on my renewal.

damn, did you have to pay crazy fines?

thanks for the info. guess ill just fork it over and make sure to go the speed limit through there in the future. still would like to hear AOE's take though. probably should have put his name in the title.

It wasn't cheap.

I had to pay the original fine, a failure to appear charge and some sort of administrative fee.

Ditto. Got one in LaGrange about 9 years ago. Blew it off because I was 22 y/o at the time; all I did was make sure I kept a low profile on that stretch of 71. Nothing happened until about 3 years ago when I couldn't renew my license and I had a hit on my credit report (it had been turned over to a collection agency). Ended up costing me a lot of money.

You can probably work out a deal where they will drop one if you pay the other. Get the inspection fixed, and they will most likely drop that one. If you do not pay the tickets, not only do they go to warrant, but you also get a Fail to Appear charge added to the charges. Your speeding/expired mvi ticket will go from whatever it was to about $1000.00 extra. The fail to appear charge is usually about $500.00, and you get one for each charge. The other fines go to maximum as well... Just some insight into how the warrant system works.

I think Louisiana is still using the telegram to relay information so the chances of that catching up to you are slim.

think it all depends on the town..if they report it to the state or not.

some of the small towns dont report it..just collect the fines as a mean of income to the town.

have had 3 tickets in small towns over the years

got one in Calvert in 1997..never paid the ticket or anyhting. have not had any issues nor have heard from them..just better not get pulled over there again.

got a ticket in Thorndale in 2002. Never paid the ticket..they sent me notices. I ignored them..then they sent me a letter basically telling me to pay the fine or else they would report it and I would be blocked from renewing my DL, and could face more fines. I paid the original fine..but like 3 years later.

got a ticket in Rogers in 2006. Never did anything, they sent me 2 notices within a year..have not heard anything from them since..and have renewed my license since then as well.
