i need to get my portable generator repaired and i have no idea who provides this service....it runs fine but it's not producing any electricity.....i tried to troubleshoot it on my own, hoping to find something simple like a blown fuse, but no such luck.....when it comes to working with electrical systems, i'm fairly useless.......

i live in the willowbrook area......

Your best bet (unless someone can provide a reference) is to Google small engine repair and your zip code. Usually a few will come up. I just had my generator serviced from one of these guys. The guy I used did it out of his trailer but he was cheap. I would give you his info but I'm in Spring and I am sure there are a bunch closer to you.

Try Cay Power Products over off 290 and Mangum. They're good folks.

I would try Bland's Lawn & Garden on Spring Cypress near Kuykendahl.

I have no idea what the details on your generator are, but I'd think the small engine repair guys would be good for engine problems, engine service, etc. But from what you described, the engine is running fine but you're not getting any voltage from the generator end.

If that's the case, then you're probably going to want someone with some more experience on that end so that they can properly diagnose the problem.

(as a side note: The world is full of good mechanics, and its full of good electrical guys. What aren't a dime a dozen, are techs that are good at both. If you ever have a kid that isn't necessarily interested in going to college, but they have a engineer's type brain and like to work with their hands, a good generator technician can make dang good money, both here and abroad. The other field that would be good for kids like that: Elevator technician. I'll step off my non-college bound kid advice soapbox now.)

You can save yourself a ton of money maybe by doing some web searches. It is not uncommon AT ALL for generators to lose their ability to create a voltage at the rated amperages if left idle. But they are easily restored, often just by running them awhile under load. Sometimes it takes a bit more, like using another generator to restore the one not working.

Google " generator and flashing the fields". It will give you lots of info.

googled it......this has disaster written all over it for me.....i can already smell the acrid smoke from my singed arm hairs......

Field Flashing of Portable Generators
1) Plug an electric drill into the generator receptacle. (Cordless drills do not work)
If the drill is reversible, move the direction switch to the forward position.
2) Start the generator.
3) While depressing the trigger on the drill, spin the drill chuck in reverse direction. This will excite the field and the generator will now produce electricity.
4) If spinning the chuck one direction does not work, try spinning the chuck in the other direction as you may have the reverse switch positioned backwards.

Not on the NW side of town, but I run a repair shop @ 610 and Almeda on the south side of town. Send me an email and I'll help you out (free labor, reduced price on parts). No charge for us to look at it and tell you what's wrong.

Call my office @ 713-794-9802 ask for Rollin.
