There was a book that came out a few years ago called "Houston: Then and Now" that sounds very similar.

There have been multiple giant dome proposals over the years. That book covers at least two of them.

Sounds like an agenda-driven hitjob based on a false premise:

quote:
Driven by an almost fanatical desire for whatever is new, "modern," and likely to make money, Houston is constantly in the process of remaking itself. Few structures remain from the nineteenth century, and even much of the twentieth-century built environment has fallen before the wrecking ball of "progress." Indeed, the demolition of older buildings in Houston can be compared to the destruction of cityscapes such as Berlin, Warsaw, and Tokyo in World War II.

Also, The Big Rich, among other things, gives some good insight into the driving forces during the boom period that shaped a lot of our city's direction.

The US Post Office at 401 Franklin is a good example of how we redevelop. It is the 3rd major structure to stand on that site since the late 1800s.

It was originally developed as Houston Grand Central Depot in 1887:

It was redeveloped in the 1930s as Southern Pacific Grand Central Station:

and again in the 1960s to its current form as the Houston Central Post Office:

The site is apparently for sale and is likely to be redeveloped again when it sells.

Cool pictures Ryan.

It's a shame because that building is pretty hideous now.
