so, the lighthouse was the only thing to survive? hard to tell if its missing the top or not.

I had heard there wasn't anything standing from the big store up to the ferry landing.

I think the lighthouse is intact - I'm not sure about the surrounding structures. There is a lot of history there - I'm glad to know that at least the tower survived.

I think the first photo (and the following colored postcard) depicts the red and white lighthouse as it must have appeared when it was first built in 1872. Obviously the red and white paint disappeared over the next 100+ years, but you can see it is the same structure. I read somewhere that the original lighthouse was torn down by confederate soldiers during the Civil War so Union soldiers couldn't use it to guide their ships into Galveston Bay.

Mother nature can be cruel. Not much can stand up to the force of water/waves.

I saw some helicopter video on TV and the structures next to the ligthhouse are intact as well.
