Alright, you see these places everywhere. I'm talking about tiny little places in strip malls and what not. I'm not talking about places like Los Cucos, Cafe Adobe, Chuy's, El Tiempo, etc.

These places are always REALLY hit or miss. Sometimes you can get some fantastic food for a really cheap price, while other times you leave feeling that you got what you pay for. So what/where are the good ones?

There was a place called La Tapatia (sp?) on Richmond near Montrose that I used to go to when I worked at AIG. It was real good, real cheap, and really filled you up.

Casa de Leon on Longpiont btwn Blalock and Campbell.

I would eat breakfast there everyday of my life if my stupid high maintenance wife would let me.

Hellz yeah... haven't seen the hole-in-the-wall Mexican food place thread in a while.

This will quickly become a contest of who can one-up who with the most dive place in town.

This is a place I would go to with people from work. I haven't been there in a while since changing jobs. Good lunch specials.

funny that nobody's mentioned what Brian asked for. He means carnicerias (meat mkts) where they have a lunch counter inside a small grocery store.
Try any La Michoacana (several around town) or maybe Matamoros or SuperMercado Gigante or Guerrero's.
Brian is right, sometimes you can strike gold for $5.00.

didnt realize he was talking about meat markets. are these places any good? i assumed he was talking about smaller, non-chain restaurants and taquerias

I'll third La Tapatia on Richmond. We eat there nearly weekly. Some of the dishes are great and there is always a good mix of people in there when we go.

I admit to eating at Ruchi's on Shepherd and West Alabama on a fairly frequent basis...

When I lived inside the loop used to go to Cortez Meat Market on Alabama. Had a seafood paella they made only on Sunday brunch. Man it was great. They moved to Shepherd location, now I don't know where they are.

R.I.P., Leo's on Washington, near Waugh (where a Star Pizza is now). It was an institution for about 60-70 years. The original owner rode with Pancho Villa. It was a no-frills place, but churned out quality Tex-Mex, and always had friendly service.

I miss it.

IMO, the best way to do this is just drive around and actually stop at one that you aren't familiar with...this is Houston. There is good food everywhere and alot of it is not promoted ... so just explore and enjoy.

(and it does help if you have an iron gut like me)

clavell - you're showing your age. It's been awhile.

maroon - Leo's was on Shepherd (near Fairview) before it was on Washington.

La Fiesta is not a taqueria. it has been there forever, but is not the same level as the others mentioned.

while on the subject of that one, Mr. C's irish pub next door is our favorite after work pisstank!

chico, yeah it was in 80s, but man I would go there at least two Sunday's a month.
chico
How long do you want to ignore this user?
clavell-we probably were there together. I cured many a hangover eatin' their paella on a Sun morn.
