Born and raised here and its sad I dont know anything more than Popeyes, Churches, Williams, and the place that shou not be named (started with K)

But I want some real fried chicken. Anyone know of a good place to get some down home, non chain fried chicken here in the H?
I lin in midtown, so you 1960ers and Cypressers stay out of it.

so pretty much you don't care about the taste, but you want to eat somehwere that's not a chain.

my suggestion is to buy church's and take it into a ****hole gas station.

great chicken in a "hole in the wall" atmosphere. everything an aggie could want.

I pass this place on the corner of Almeda and Southmore in the mornings that has 'down home' cooking. I bet they have some good fried chicken.

This would be more helful if I could remember the name. Just go to the intersection. It's on the corner that is not a Walgreen's, Dollar Store or gas station.

Not sure on their menu, but I'm sure you could find what you're looking for at 'Soul Food' in Midtown.

i love the Church's at 6th St. and Heights Blvd. and miss it dearly.

also, just an fyi, the best Popeye's in Houston is at Richmond and Chimney Rock.

fried chicken places are hit and miss to me but these places are great.

Frenchy's at waco and i-10.

don't let the 3" thick bullet proof glass keep you from eating there. It is the best in town.

Frenchy's is excellent.

Hartz has a decent chicken strip, but its a chain. Actually, frenchy's is too.

No the first replier misinterpereted me because I didnt make myself clear enough. I could care less if its a chain, Ive just had them a million times and want a good down home southern place for some real fried chicken.

Most other southern cities Ive been to have legendary fried chicken places. Most here are chains, thats all.

Hartz's is the one Ive never tried, and I boycotted KFC years ago.

Loved Frenchies until I got a piece of chicken with a feather in it. I didnt eat fried chicken for 3 years.

The best fried chicken in Houston was Ms. Savannah's in the Donald Davidson room at the Astrodome.

luby's

If you catch a fresh batch it's not too shabby, plus you can get decent mashpotatoes and cream gravy to go with it.

Scantron, don't know how you are familiar with Miss Savannah's fried chicken in the Astrodome media dining room, but I must concur. Had a couple of thousand pieces over the years. Quality stuff.

mmmmmm Hartz fried gizzards. Sooo good. The Hartz in Brenham was awesome for the buffet. My grandma loves that place. The one up by The Woodlands was pretty grimy the one time I went, so Hartz, like every chain, is hit or miss.

Their fried livers are excellent, too.

There's a nice, clean Hartz up in Cleveland, Texas for those passing through.

My Houston favorite is Frenchy's on Scott next to Cougar High's football stadium. The chicken is always fresh because there is always a line to purchase. Red beans with sausage and peach cobbler is also excellent.
