Looking to the east right after what was then the West Freeway (now I-30) was built. Arlington Heights High School on the right. My future mother in law, along with her friend, John Deutschendorf (which he later changed to John Denver) were students there at this time.

Right click and open in new tab to see hi res image.

Cool picture, this is my exit, I live in the Tanglewood area. I had no idea that John Denver went to Arlington Heights. Seems like he didn't like it much though, I just read his Wikipedia page and it said he ran off to California and had to be brought back by his dad to finish school haha.

cool pic! Wonder what the building is on the right side close up w/ flags?
Amazing how much land was lost when they expanded 30. Look how much land there was in front of heights

Not to hijack your thread but this site has a ton of historical photos and a literal book about the freeways in the metroplex - http://www.dfwfreeways.com/ - figured folks that like history would find it interesting.

Cool pic and its clear that the Hulen exit has only gotten marginally better since this picture was taken.

I haven't been to original kincaids in years, unfortunately. Does it still hold up?

Hulen exit is still 1000x better than the University and Montgomery exits. Whoever thought "hey let's put two exits about 20 feet apart, and make the first exit pretty much a complete u-turn" is a total idiot. So dangerous and poorly designed. I heard it will be redone soon when they rebuild I-30 in a few years, can't happen soon enough.

The University/Montgomery exit is a leftover from the original West Freeway build. It's been like that since at least 1952.

The U turn to get onto University is because of the river. University ran right along the west side of the river, so there was no where to put an off ramp, so they did the U turn thing. That was designed in the 1940's.

Orig Kincaid's is still going strong. Not much of a grocery store now, but they still have the stand up eating area if one chooses. Most folks sit at the indoor picnic tables. Food is great, and my parents are totally hooked on the choco shakes when I can get over that way!

I work near there and it's still good. But the new location of Fred's is closer and imho 10X better.

Ok thanks for the info. Need to get back there. We were regulars at the original Freds (prior to kids) and have been to the new one a couple times even though its been several months. It seems like its holding up but the service was lacking. One of my daughters got the chicken strips and they were damn good. Not just the usual frozen strips that they throw in a fryer. They're tossed in the chicken fried steak batter and fried perfectly. Making me hungry.
