Why is A&M Football on a radio station with such a weak signal?

As I was driving to meet friends for the game, I wanted to listen to the pregame show, so I tried to find it on the radio. I eventually found the game on 92.1 "The Possum", an oldies country station. The signal was very weak and kept on getting interference with some spanish station.

I looked it up and the station has a broadcast power of 1.6 kW. By contrast, texas is on KRLD 1080 (50kW), TCU is on WBAP 820 (50kW) and North Texas is on The Ticket 96.7 (90kW).

Texas A&M is the biggest university in the state and we have a massive fanbase.

Why are our football games on a station with such a weak signal?

Nowadays I think it barely matters. Most out of towners watch Aggie football on TV. Might look into streaming it if you want the audio feed.

Use the TuneIn app to stream Zone 1150 and pipe it through your car audio. It's what we do on road trips.

If I'm running around town on saturdays Ill put smu or texas on the radio just because it's easy and i already have the station ls saved.

Yeah I don't bother the signal is so bad. Of course the color commentary added so little I just turned it off and decided to watch highlights when I got back.

No one really listens to college football on the radio anymore. I bet it's been over 10 years since I've listened to an A&M football game on the radio. All the games are on TV or on SiriusXm.

As chick79 said not many listen to football games on the radio. Listen on app or tunein. How many of y'all still get a newspaper?

I agree that terrestrial radio is no longer the prominent medium and I concede that there are better options for die hard A&M fans. But this isn't just about A&M fans.

Perhaps more than any other sport, college football is about branding and marketing. You want to make it as easy as possible for the casual fan with no ties to the school to tune in and follow your game.

As much as we laugh at tshirt fans, you want them to buy your tshirts and follow your team. There's a chance that their child may be the next big recruit.

This is something that texas excels at and A&M has really struggled with in the past. In my opinion, the Big 12 keeping A&M games of TV was a big part of the reason why A&M left for the SEC.

If A&M was upset about having restricted media access on one medium, why are we voluntarily restricting their media access in a different medium?

Is the A&M athletic department hurting so bad for money that they're selling their media rights to a place that no one will listen?

Radio stations are always hurting for content on the weekends. Why not find a station with a strong signal and give them a sweetheart deal? Yes, A&M may not make as much money off the contract but the increased exposure will be worth it in the long run.

There is no exposure on the radio. You can stream the game from your phone while driving and have live broadcast on your own speakers. Hell I watched some at the ranch with barely any cell service. I'm not even sure a kid born after 2000 knows what AM/FM is. I would hope A&M doesn't spend a single dime on radio. My 9 year old's softball team can stream games on apps now for about 12 viewers

That said, listening to a close game on the radio with Dave South making the calls was one of the more exciting ways to take in a game.

It's worth it to get a better radio signal - didn't we used to be on ESPN Radio (which might not be around anymore)?

Anyway, if you have XM radio, the college whiparound radio show each Saturday is great. It's basically a redzone channel for college football radio. I listen to it when I'm running errands or doing yardwork in the fall and its a great way to keep up with most games going on in college football.

Looking at the radio network's list of stations is is kind of amazing how much things have dropped off over the years, 30+ years ago we were on clear channels in the big cities and the strongest channels everywhere else.
