What is the best route to get to College Station from Dallas. I normally take Tollway >35>6 .

Yeah nowadays just use whatever GPS says. In our case it's just whatever things we haven't seen lately. Sometimes you want to go through Waco and sometimes you just gotta see Madisonville

For those that haven't been through Waco lately, the construction is gone and it's a breeze

For the I45 folks just FYI there's a section of 39 being replaced between Normangee and 21. Lucked into it a couple of weeks ago. Just north of 21 there's a mile or two of dirt/gravel.

I'd suggest taking OSR to 6 from Normangee.

How you get to Normangee is always up for debate. I'm a 45 to OSR type personally.

Wait wut…I thought it was a law in Texas that at least some part of 35 in Waco had to be under construction?

Agree with above. I have a freshman son down there so we have made a lot of trips lately. The 39 gravel road is no bueno. OSR from 45 to 6. I actually like that OSR stretch from Normangee to 6.

I've been doing it for 35 years.

Timewise - each route is really pretty close assuming you are not Speed Racer.

Tollway to 45 to 14 to 6 is the shortest distance. Drawbacks are the police in Wortham, Kosse, Bremond and Calvert. Yes, I have visited with the police in each city - but only once.

Tollway to 45 to OSR to 39 to 190/21 might be the fastest by a few minutes. Drawback is the road quality on OSR and 39. They have redone OSR, but the trucks are constantly tearing that road up.

Tollway to 45 to Madisonville. Not really any time difference and might be the least stressful drive due to more time on 45.

Tollway to 35 to 6 is a new contender now. Waze and Maps will generally show it as fast as going down 45. Now that most of the construction is done, it is much more appealing. With Bucee's opening soon at Hillsboro and any stop in West or a hunger for George's Crazy Wings as brought it into the rotation much more frequently. Only real police problems are Calvert and Riesel.

Getting from the Tollway to 45 can be a real hassle at times and sometimes we like to avoid it. You also have to be careful about what time you return up 45.

It all comes down to driving preference. I like going down 14. My wife now prefers 35 to 6. My daughter just plugs it into Waze and goes how it tells her. The problem with that coming into Dallas is if you are on 45 there are few alternatives if there is trouble near downtown when you get there.

I don't care what construction, traffic or any other nonsense is going on I'm not driving 35 if there are alternatives.

I guess if I was already south of i20 I could tolerate it some days but being in Collin county I can't do it that long and maintain my sanity

35 to 6 is the best way for me, but I live in Arlington. 35 is wide open all the way through Waco, and 6 is two lanes both sides all the way now.

Always did 45 to 14 to 6 when living in Dallas since it's the shortest.

This has been my go-to for 7-8 years. I can see where having to slow down in all the small towns would be annoying for some, but for me it breaks up the monotony of taking I-45 past Corsicana to Buffalo/OSR/Madisonville.

Only stopped twice - once for speeding, once for no front plate (TxDPS, warnings both times).

Same for me. More opportunities to stop - depending on bathroom needs of young and old. Few if any semis. For years and years we drove down and back for most games and coming in off 2818 and University was always the easiest way in and out.

I get it, but the hardest stretch on 35 is down to the stretch from downtown to 35/67 split.
I don't like 35 on Friday or Sunday afternoon, but now that it is widened through Waco and you can get off at Loop 340 around to 6, you aren't in traffic hardly ever.

Highway 39 south of Normangee is tore up. I drove through it this weekend and it's basically caliche in both directions with a number of potholes filled with aggregate. About 2 miles. I'm sure they will have it fixed in a few weeks but probably moving north or south from there.

Man, loop 340 in Waco has been covered in traffic it seems like for the past 4 years or so.

I just take 35 to 6.

The only places you have to worry about is traffic in Waco and the train in Hearne. Look at your GPS about 20 minutes before you hit both of those places to see if you need to reroute, but normally on Friday afternoon and Sunday morning you are good to go.

Oh and make sure you are going the exact speed limit posted in Riesel. They always have a cop stationed somewhere on 6.

Great thing about living in Tarrant County is that there is only one real option so we don't have to go through the mental gymnastics the poor Dallas County Ags experience.

Biggest debate is taking the loop in Waco or Business 77/484 to get to 6 (hint fools, it's the latter).

This is the correct answer. Move to Fort Worth and start from there, then its 35-Business 77-6.

We were always 45-osr-39-21-6 people.

We did 45-7-39-osr-6 this weekend. Not bad. Speed limit on OSR passed normangee is 60 though. Should be 65 or 70.

In all my years, I've never done 14 through mexia. Took that way home this weekend. Not the fastest since I like to put the CC on 85 on 45 but it was a pretty drive with lots of opportunities to stop.

Reason I don't like this one ^ is because 7 through Jewett is pretty slow. Might only be 2 miles or so but I hate that.

Always did 45-OSR-39-21-6 before but I did just straight 45-OSR-6 this week because that stretch from Normangeee to North Zulch on 39 is under construction. It was good. Speed limit might have been 60 on OSR but it was empty so I was going at least 75 anyway.

I think you mean 79. 7 doesn't go through Jewett - 7 is the woodys gas station turnoff in Centerville off 45. You're only on 7 for about 4 miles then turn straight south on the 39 drag strip. We only did this because our little one needed to pee and luckily informed us right as I saw the 7Centerville exit.

Thanks to TexAgs I avoided the normangee to nzulch 39 strip and turned on OSR.

Since we're staying out on the northwest side of town this season, OSR-6-2818 will be our route likely… or doing the 14 route again.

Yeah sorry couldn't remember the number of the Buffalo to Jewett road cuz I don't take it any more. It is 79.

I see where 7 is now. Never done it but don't think I would because it's further north than OSR. More time on I-45 is faster I think in general so I stay on it as far as I can now and OSR is the last chance really before Madisonville (which is just too slow with the traffic and lights.).

I used to exit Buffalo on 7 only cuz the kids always needed a pit stop. I just drive straight through now.

give it a shot sometime, for these reasons.

45 is moving southeast, in the wrong direction. 39 travels almost perfectly N to S. The distance between 45 and 39 @ 7 and 45 and 39 @ OSR is 5-6 miles. You can usually travel almost just as fast on 39 as you can 45, especially between the 7 turn off and Normangee (no towns to slow down). I also think the stretch of 7 right there is much better than OSR. That section of OSR has a lot of narrow bridges and blind turns.

*shrug* it's maybe a few minutes different and that gas state at OSR/45 isn't too bad. Sucks you can't buy tallboys at the Centerville gas station (dry county), IYKWIM.

Not going anywhere near 39 between Centerville and Normangee. Think I still owe the city of Jewett for being 5 miles over the limit.
