I need a nice suit. Can't afford to go bespoke, but I'd like to get a suit that is NICE and have it tailored to fit me really well.

Any advice on where I should go to buy one? It would be nice to go somewhere where the staff really knows their stuff and can help me get a suit that actually CAN be altered to fit me really well.

I did a search and saw the tailor thread from back in August. Seems like lots of folks recommended Harry's but said it was expensive. Anyone have any detail on what that means?

you just missed the TexAgs tailor (from Varsity board) in town from Bangkok, you probably could have gotten a custom suit for what you are looking to spend. Otherwise I would go to the Shops at Park Lane and between Saks Off 5th, Nordstrom Rack and Bloomingdales you should be able to find a lot of nice options at a discount.

Groupon for $599 Suit from Lombardo

I've done this one - they'll show you a dozen or so fabrics, or you can pay another $200 for the option of another 50-60 fabrics. Takes about 4-5 weeks to get done. I think all in, I was at $950, which was an upgraded fabric, custom working button holes, and a custom liner in the jacket.

I've also done a package from Culwell & Son, but prefer the one from Lombardo much more.

If you go off-the-rack, take it to Harry's that you referenced. They're at Alpha/Preston, cash only, and one of their kids went to A&M. They've done a few suits of mine, and of which look great.

If you want more high-end, Drew Jones, would be the place to go.

Just go to Nordstrom rack and get it tailored somewhere else. I get compliments on my suits often and that's where I go. I like John Varvatos suits and they've always had them there.

you question should be "can anyone recommend a GREAT Tailor?

There are cheap suits.
There are decent suits
There are awesome suits.
Then there are the bespoke suits made with top of the line fabrics (120+ wools)

They all live in very different price ranges.

But the good news is an awesome tailor isn't much more than a decent tailor.

And a decent suit worked by a awesome tailor will look a 100's times better than an awesome suit worked by a decent tailor.

So, who is a great tailor if you are in the area?

Side note: the one old school tailor I've used had his ID tattoo courtesy of Hitler. That will blow your mind.

What's your budget, what's it for, and how many times per month do you plan to wear it?

If your budget is $500 or less than I suggest indochino or sites like it. Indochino runs pretty regular sails and you can get a really decent suit for less than $500. They can send you a free measuring tape do you can input your numbers for a bespoke fit. You get to customize several features and when all done they send it to you and give you up to a $75 alteration credit for any needed tweaks

I don't wear a suit very often. But the ones I have are kinda old and I've lost a bunch of weight and they don't really fit me that well. I never had them altered by a good tailor aside from just sleeves and hems so they never fit me well anyway.

I don't wear suits for work, so I'm hoping to get something that is versatile that I can dress up or down and wear for the occasional fancy night out, wedding, etc.

As far as budget goes, I'm willing to spend what it will cost to get a good suit that fits me well, but I'm not looking to spend at least a certain amount. Let's just say that $800 for the suit and tailoring is the hard cap (at least based on what I think I know now).

I want to make an impression on people, but I don't think that I typically hang with folks who could look at my suit and know whether I spent $300 or $1300 anyway. They'll know whether I look nice and whether it fits well, but I don't think I need to worry about people going any deeper than that.

If going to Jos A Bank and getting a $300 suit and having it tailored will get me an A- and spending $600 on a suit and having it tailored will get me to an A+, I'd go with the first option and be good with an A-.

Hopefully that clarifies things.

What's the turnaround time at Harry's? I think I'm going shopping tomorrow or Thursday and need it back in a couple of weeks. Is that going to be possible?

Yeah, for what you're describing, I'd go to Nordstrom Rack or one of the equivalent secondary stores of high end department stores, find a good suit thats been marked down a bunch, then get it tailored. I've gotten great deals on really nice suits at Nordstrom Rack before.

It also boils down to what style of suit are you wanting. Jos A Bank suits are fuller and more American style "think boxy" vs Nordstrom Rack could be more of a true tailored fit.

in my opinion, get you something well fitting for your body type. if that means spending a little extra to get that... then you'll be the sharpest dressed guy in room every time

my personal preference is the more European/Italian--higher arm holes, tailored/slimmer sleeves and pant legs, suppressed coat, lower rise flat front trousers, side vent jacket with a slim notch or peak lapel

I've learned a very expensive lesson that tailoring a fuller cut suit off the rack to fit your frame when you're not fuller cut, does not end well

I don't have to wear suits too often (thank God) but I hadn't bought a new suit since I graduated in 2006. Mine were looking ratty, b****, and wanted to move on from the pleated pants look. Got 4 suits from Jos. A.Bank when they had one of their buy 1 get 3 free sales, then took them to Harry's. I believe he did it for something like $80/suit, which meant taking in the crotch of the pants, tapering the legs, and fitting the jacket to me. Very happy with his work. I will also say, though, that this is probably the last time I do a Jos. A Bank suit. They are fine for what they are, and it made financial sense, but I will likely go custom at some point or buy a nicer suit from Nordstrom Rack or something and have it tailored.

I got a great looking suit here for $500 a few years ago. The brand name was Paul Betenly.

Does anyone have an idea on the turnaround time for Harrys to tailor a suit?

He did it in 6 days for me, but I needed it for a wedding. I think generally a week to 10 days depending on how busy he is.

I would wait until June or December when saks, barneys, or Neimans clear out the suit collections for designer suits.

Last Call from Neimans. Go to the one in Grapevine as they have actual NM merchandise not just the outlet crap. Ask to make sure which section you are looking at.

You can get a legit $1700 suit for about $500. The made for outlet stuff can be had for $300-$500. Some of them aren't bad.
