Howdy! I'm a new grad moving to the dallas area and these are the areas i've been looking to live. Which one of these areas would be best for a young twenty something?

You live in the Village for the value. If you can live in Uptown or near Greenville do it. You would be living in the Village to attempt to get close to those areas on a budget.

Depends on what you want.

Uptown is high speed, crowded bars, $30k millionaires everywhere. Yuppie central. But it's nice, and there are hot girls.

The village is more geared toward SMU students. It's nice and there are hot girls.

Greenville area (my neighborhood) is wayyyy less pretentious, has older, and more historic bars and restaurants. Great place to be a 20something. Also very nice, with hot girls, although maybe less stuck up hot girls.

Don't be swayed by the uptown rhetoric. Its really nice and probably the ideal spot for a 20 something if the price fits your budget. I prefer Greenville and Henderson but its definitely a slightly older demo. Think 28-40 year olds that prefer conversation and good music.

The uptown = 30k millionaires thing is way way way overdone.

During the weekend, sure, I bet that there are plenty who come down from Addison, Forney, Plano, etc... But living here is not cheap. $30k isn't going to cut it. $60k may be where you could start doing it.

Uptown is filled with (primarily) young professionals from large state schools (think SEC/Big 12/B1G schools) who work professional jobs in downtown, uptown, the hospitals, or commute out to their job. 8/10 of the largest lawfirms are here, all of the Big 4 accounting groups are here, developers, banks, etc...No people who are scraping by. Most everyone is 25-35, educated, not married, and wants to live in an area filled with others like them.

You're in the city, so there will be crime. BMV's, homeless on occasion, and other things happen. If you want to avoid that, I hear Shops at Legacy is great. Greenville and Village have the same issues.

If you can afford it, I cannot emphasize enough to live in uptown for at least a year or two. Then decide where you fit and feel like moving.

I've lived in Deep Ellum and Uptown, and visit Greenville fairly frequently.

The answer is uptown, and it's not even close. If you're afraid of being surrounded by aging frat guys who aren't quite ready to give up their lifestyles, live north of the Katy Trail along Turtle Creek or Oak Lawn, you're still only 5 or 10 minutes walk (or a really cheap cab ride) from the action, but your immediate neighbors will be more in the 30-40 year old range. Much quieter and More laid back overall. Still very nice buildings, and a little bit cheaper.

I Left Dallas for a few years before coming back last year, and have been surprised at the abundance of Hitler-esque haircuts in the bars on Greenville. I guess its a new hipster fad or something.

Basically, If you look like you have to dress professionally for a respectable job, you'll fit in better in uptown. If you have gauge earrings, huge fake glasses, dark dyed hair in your face, and visible facial piercings, go for Greenville.

Its a cost saving approach to being "near" uptown or Greenville. Not much by it other than restaurants.

Uptown 10 times out of 10

I'm not sure why some guys get hung up on critiquing the GUYS in uptown, and somehow just don't care that it has more hot ladies in one place than pretty much any neighborhood in America, and as good of a nightlife scene as you'll find anywhere

Greenville and Knox/Henderson and a few other spots are good every so often, but that's what Uber is for

The village is fine. I've lived right by the village and in uptown. The upside to the Village is that it is a little less "hectic" and a little more relaxing. It's hard to explain, but something about actually seeing grass and trees can be nice. You also have everything nearby and parking is easy (both parking for the apartments and for the restaurants/stores around. The downside is that you will have to take a cab when you go out on the weekends (whether you go to uptown or Greenville). So I would add in your monthly cab fares to the rent price when comparing.

If you can afford it and you like to go out, I'd go uptown. If uptown will make your budget too tight, the Village is a fine option. Plus, you can always live in the village and then move to uptown after a year or two when you can more easily afford it or if you see that you really want to live there. Having a roommate in uptown would also help, and it might be easier to find a roommate after living here for a year.

The part about greenville is bs. Maybe it was like that a few years ago, but check out the crowds at HG Supply Co/Sundown at Granada/Dallas Beer Kitchen, etc. some time. It's not like you're describing. It's a mix of young professionals and some hipsters, and it tilts slightly older than uptown.

I find that there are hot girls all over Dallas, and in any of the three places OP named.

OP what is it that you desire in a neighborhood?

I'm going to throw Deep Ellum into the mix, too. Great night life, excellent (local) restaurant choices, and everything is very walkable. You're also close to Uptown, Downtown, and Greenville.

Yes, it's more "hipster" than Uptown or Greenville, but it's a great neighborhood with a lot of character. Crime has made a significant improvement in the last 10-15 years. Crime is going to be an issue regardless of what neighborhood you live in around Dallas.

I've said this in another thread about this topic

If in CS, your favorite bars were the Corner, Logans, Cedar Lane, and the like....you'll like the types of bars that are in Uptown.

If your favorite bars were Fitzwillies, the Chicken, and Dry Bean, you probably won't.

Aggieruger04, i'm looking for a young community, with stuff to do at least in driving distance. I just want to be able to meet people easily

You are moving to Dallas, everything is withing driving distance. Deep Ellum, Uptown, Lakewood/G'ville, The Village, are all within about 5 square miles of each other, so you aren't going to miss out. If you live Uptown/Deep Ellum/G'Ville you'll be able to walk/bike to a bunch of stuff. If you live in the Village you'll still be a short cab ride away from everything you'd want to do, plus there will be a bunch of college and recent grad aged people living there. Dallas is a relatively young city, especially within the city limits, so you'll find college grads everywhere. I happen to live in the Greenville area and love the neighborhood and people, but I was a Duddley's Draw rat in College Station. Like a previous poster said, if you are a Logan's/Corner Bar type, Uptown will be good for you. Either way, can't go wrong, Dallas is a fun place to live.

Addison is way more likely to be the place you see stereotype d-bags in affliction shirts....

To answer your question. Addison has some great restaurants but isn't a great place to live IMO. I have friends that have very fond memories of Addison so I won't say it can't be a good time but it's definitely more geared towards over drinkers and stereotypes.

you can smoke in Addison bars, which is reason enough not to live there. plus it's north of 635, beltline traffic can be a red light/green light nightmare, and there's an abundance of affliction or UFC bros.
