The Mrs. and I are eyeing a relocation to the Lake Highlands area. Thoughts? Good neighborhooods, ones to avoid? Recommendations?

There are lots of good neighborhoods, but if you have kids, certain schools tend to create more desirable areas. Scattered throughout LH are some older, run down apartments that are unfortunately a fact a life for LH; but several have been closed down and in the works for re-development. I expect over the next 5-10 years if the economy doesn't derail, there will be quite a bit of new re-development in LH, the property & rent values have gotten high enough to make the numbers work for developers.

If you would like some more detail I am happy to help, I live and work in the area.

Good area and has some good schools, but you have to pick your neighborhood carefully. Some are on the way up and others not so much.

If you REALLLLY want to know what's going on in the area, come to Lake Highlands Aggie Happy Hour Association some time. Search for LHAHHA and the time/place should be in there somewhere.
(Note: Threads may be titled LHHHAHHAHAHA or LHAAAAHAHA or some combination thereof. It changes based on who posts it and how many Shiners they've had.)

Avoid Stults, Forest Lane, Skyview, and Northlake** Elementary

**Northlake is trying to gentrify but it's struggling with the Principal... otherwise, it's really about price point and neighborhood preference...

Northlake could be a huge win but it's a gamble... If they gentrify, prices will skyrocket and you could make 50%, if it fails, prices will hold and may not appreciate and you can shoot for a transfer...

I live in Lake Highlands North a.k.a the "ABC streets." I like it a lot. House prices probably start around $300k up to $600k or so. White Rock Valley is also nice, but more expensive. The L Streets are a little cheaper, but houses are also smaller. I don't know anything about the Merriman Park neighborhoods, but the elementary school has a good reputation.

There are a lot of good Realtors on here, but if you're considering Lake Highlands North or White Rock Valley, I would highly suggest my guy - http://warrensibley.com/. He lives in and is very active in the neighborhood, so he was a lot of help when buying.

Also to clarify, Lake Highlands North is split between White Rock Elementary and Northlake Elementary - west of Fieldcrest goes to White Rock, east goes to Northlake. However, right now, not one single neighborhood kid goes to Northlake. As Deats mentioned above, there is a movement to revitalize Northlake - http://backnorthlake.com/. Houses on Northlake side are 10-15% cheaper because of the school, which can go towards paying for private school.

I'll add Aiken to Deats' list. Anything on the North side of 635 should be avoided.

My kids are a MPE by choice(transfer out of Skyview). Went to MPE myself. School is full of Aggies , It is definitely more blended and balanced than WRE, but I will not knock WRE as I have no first hand experience. As a product of Lake Highlands, I definitely felt more balnced than other north dallas high school...cough...cough...HP...grads having interacted with all levels of the social, economic, academic, athletic, and racial spectrum, and not just people that looked and acted just like me.
Skyview actually has a neighborhood group of 15-20 3 year olds ready to enroll in 2 years. If we did not already have 2 at MPE we would entertain the idea.
Forest Meadow has its challenges, but it always has, and has always made it work well.

Oh, and whatever you do, avoid Shelby James like the plague.

Forest Meadow always felt like it was about to go Lord of the Flies at any minute. But that's probably all junior highs.

What stunt did he pull on you? He forged my BIL's signature on a document in a home sale. BAAAAD idea when your client is a real estate attorney. This was shortly before he left Ebby. Very very shortly before.

Scriffer, heard that "legend" about the forgery and atty... that's awesome you know them...

He tried to fight a guy I know with the guys kid in car... Guy said Shelby was one more step from a 9mm...

He was sellers agent on my buddies house... They faxed over the final offer with some cash for issues, he faxed it back and said no changes were made and signed it...

He actually had blacked out the cash back...

A pissed off husband pissed on his desk at Ebby... you can guess why...

I'm sure this website is not perfect, but it gives stats/reviews on all schools http://www.greatschools.org/texas/dallas/5722-Moss-Haven-Elementary-Schoolrl]/?tab=reviews

Old School, the majority of complaints are not from his clients

I may be biased but I love MHE and its community spirit. But my wife teaches there.

Another endorsement for MPE. We have been in the neighborhood 8 yrs and at MPE two yrs. the principal at MPE is the best in LH. The families are involved and not cultish like White Rock.

I'm in the Stults Road section. It's kind of teetering right now. My street is great, especially since I bought the crack house and do not supply crack to the neighbors. Probably wouldn't plunk a family down here though, unfortunately.
