Might be celebrating my son's birthday soon and steak could be the best choice. Looking for recs in Fort Worth.

I'm not a big fan of formula steakhouses (Ruth Chris, Sullivan's, etc.) although I won't rule them out. The $40 piece of meat on a white plate and ala carte everything is just soooo boring. I am interested in prime beef. Is Lonesome Dove as good as some say? Thanks for any recommendations.

Never ate at Lonesome Dove but for a non-steakhouse H3 Ranch in the Stockyards is solid in my book. Cool setting and the steaks are solid.

Before Yell my wife had the filet and I had the flaming tenderloin. I thought my steak was damn good and the little nibble I had of my wife's steak was solid as well.

Get reservations if there's a big show at Billy Bob's the night you go.

Lonesome Dove is indeed worth every penny.

I guess Silver Fox might be considered part of what you call the "formula steakhouses." But, it's very good.

H3 is a solid suggestion.

Reata's buffalo ribeye is excellent.

I've only been to Lonesome Dove once, and that was for rehearsal dinner. It was good, but I didn't think it was as great as it's hyped up to be. Although maybe the quality is better when just dining-in compared to what they do for an event like that.

Save yourself some dough and check out Hoffbrau. Their Starnes special is greatness.

The other recs are good too though.

I really enjoyed Lonesome Dove.

I've heard several people say hoffbrau has great steak for the money. Still probably not what the OP is looking for.

No. Go ask for a Jerry Starnes Special or the lunch steak and you'll probably like it a lot.

Lonesome Dove is really good but when I want steak it's Del Frisco's....best steak in town in my opinion

Wife and I are hitting Del Frisco's for Valentine's so I'm anxious to try it for the first time. Done Silver Fox and it's solid for the price.

Of course, for what we're going to pay at DF's there's a strong feeling of battling the meat gauchos at Texas de Brazil for a third of the cost. I LOVE battling those guys. It's a full contact sport.

Then again, there's a strong possibility we get sloppy drunk before dinner and just wind up at The Rig splitting one of their first class ribeyes and baked tater. Worse ways to spend it I suppose.

ha...how is The Rig? good white trash fun? i've always wanted to stop in there.

Texas de Brazil was really salty and i could barely breathe, much less walk, when we got out of there. My wife kept laughing at me because I had this stupid meat grin on my face the whole time.

Del's is MUCH better than Silver Fox. Bone in ribeye is effing spectacular.

Lonesome Dove is great, but pricey.

Mercury Chophouse is still the best all-around dinner I've had in FW, but also pricey.

I don't consider Bob's in the Top 3 steakhouses in the area.

"For the money", I'd say Lamberts is one of the tops in FW.

FWR will have to comment on The Rig as I've never been. All I know is it's in a parking lot next to a major interstate that offers truck parking, in a building that was erected in a week, and offers karaoke. Pretty sure I know what the meal and inside is like. Sounds like fun to be honest.

As for TdB if you walk out of there with no problems you have failed. I only feel like I've won if I can't walk, have the meat sweats, and the meat grin of satisfaction. It's more of an event for me than a meal.

For something a bit different you could try Bonnell's, which has regular steak but also some wild game options.

Lonesome Dove, as mentioned above, also seems to directly fit what you're looking for. It isn't your typical steak house, but they have great steaks and other options.

I also vote that, for what the OP was looking for, Lonesome Dove is the best bet. Bonnells is also a solid choice. While Del Frisco's is oen of my varites also, it is a more formulaic steakhouse by the OP's standards. For great local flavor and cooking in a historic area of town - check out Lonesoem Dove.

The Rig is pretty bad in my opinion as is Saltgrass. Bonnell's is an excellent rec, regularly have venison there and it's top notch.

This article just reminded me that I haven't been to M&M steakhouse in a while.

My son really likes Brazilian steakhouses - as we've done Fogo de Chao and Estancia (slightly lower than Fogo). So Texas de Brazil might be an option.

I have heard good things about Silver Fox - so if we do the formula thing, at least it isn't one of the ones we see in all big cities. SF is also very close to TCU.

I asked about Lonesome Dove because like many people I saw the Tomahawk Chop featured on the Food Network. It looks positively sick.

I appreciate the recommendations. Looks like we have many great choices.

I'll chime in:

I think Lonesome Dove was the best meal I have ever had in the Metroplex. Do yourself a favor and include an order of Mac and Cheese. It's amazing.

Reata is a great setting but if it's cold out it negates a lot of the value of the Reata. The food is good but there are certainly better alternatives in the area.

<Waitress> Are you guys taking off?
<Me> Yeah, I need to finish my beer first.
<Waitress> Oh, I can get you a to-go cup for that.

Service doesn't get much better in the Metroplex.

H3 isn't the best steakhouse in Fort Worth but my wife and I like the ambiance, plus the portions are relatively decent.

I think the best part of Reata is eating on the patio. :-)

Lonesome dove is amazing. I'm going to Texas De Brazil tonight! I haven't been in 5 years but I remember it being really good.

Abby - ask for the house specialty top sirloin.

I'm curious. I don't live up there but remember The Cattlemans at the Stockyards as being the best steakhouse in N Texas for generations! Its been about a dozen years since I've been there but the steaks were as good as I've had anywhere in the country.

Is it a steak restaurant? Is it in Fort Worth?

I'd put Hoffbrau slightly higher than Saltgrass imho. Absolutely love their steak soup.

Count me as another who really likes Hoffbrau. Not going to lie, I've never really been to any of these other places, and seriously doubt I could afford them anyway.
