I went to the driving range there today and realized I forgot my tees. It's the closest one to me (State Thomas uptown area) besides that overpriced Hank Haney range...

So, I get there and I ask this guy in the cart picking up balls if they sell tees/is the pro shop still open and he goes "ah nah bro I gotcha I gotcha" and he comes back and brings me a bag full of found golf balls and probably a few hundred tees. I was like, "whoaaaa thanks man!" and he looks at me and goes, "so you gonna hook me up?"

I kind of figured it was going this way... but was annoyed because I was just about to just go buy the tees myself. He goes "you got any money man? Some beer money or something?"

I didn't have any cash, so I finish my time at the driving range and he basically flags me down after and we go to the pro shop and I get him a beer.

Wasn't horrible or anything... just kinda bleh being on the driving range with this dude basically circling his way around you to see if you're done so you can go buy him a beer, lol.

I think it's the closest range near me that's cheap... only $7 something for 100-105 balls. It's $15 at hank haney. If yall know of any other places near uptown, please recommend.

Hahahaha

nah just went to the pro shop, bought him a beer... made small talk as I tried to ease my way out the door.

I guess it was a fair trade though... probably 100 recycled/found balls and a few hundred tees for a $3.50 beer.

Cedar Crest's claim to fame is the 1920s US Open they held there.

I have been struggling to find a decent driving range with GRASS. I live in Uptown McKinney and Allen.

So far the places I have found are as follows:

Hank Haney over by the medical district - ok, but expensive and they usually have the grass tees up so you can't really hit any long irons or woods.

Twin Wells - I bet your thinking whoa this is in Irving. Its not really that far at all, I would say equal or even less time than getting to Cedar Crest. They have decent grass and isn't too "ghetto at all".

Lastly, North Texas Golf Center 35 and walnut Hill - They have grass, not the greatest of grass but servicable. Balls aren't too expensive ($10 for a large bucket). And they have a short game practice area (chipping, sand, and putting, granted also not that great). It also has a 9 hole par 3 course w/ lights.

I tend to goto North Texas Golf Center the most, but those in my opinion are the best options for those who live in downtown/uptown area.

Thanks AggieC!

Yeah Hank Haney was a one time thing for me being $15 for a bucket...

Cedar Crest at $7-$8 was nice... but I think I'll only go there with a friend from now on haha

Too bad Top Golf doesn't have grass to hit off of... because I have like 9 games on my card

I'll try out this North Texas Gold Center... perhaps tonight.

Actually Top Golf does have a grass "members only" section, its right next to the gaming area. I think it actually has greens as targets. If you live over there you may want to check into it.

Yeah, it's for the VIP members... I just have the card with games on it and go every once in a while with friends.

Forgot the $ figure for VIP, but I remember thinking it wasn't worth it.

Does Stevens Park Golf Course have a driving range? It is not much further and in a nicer neighborhood (Kessler Park).

Good question... I THINK I called this one and they said they didn't have a driving range.. not 100% though as I called many that day.

I'll try again though.

I'm trying to look for something conveniently on my way home from work (on Dallas North Tollway) in between Plano and Dallas basically... Cedar Crest was definitely none of the above

andyacecandy,

Did you get to try out North Texas Golf Center?

I was just wondering what you thought of it.
nguyenning
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Not yet... I'm not sure how convenient it is for me on my way home from work.

I could go home then drive out to it, but that wouldn't make much sense.

Gmaps says it's about 20 minutes north of where I live.

Andy, you might try this place:

http://www.gbgc.net/

It's near Addison Airport, basically exit Trinity Mills and turn west. Don't know if that works for you, but it's a nice enough place.

I go to North Texas Golf Center all the time and I like it. I agree the grass on the driving range is not all that great, but it's tough to keep those up in this weather.

I also think the chipping and putting greens are pretty decent for no cost to use. The 9 hole par 3 is nice for a change of pace, and at least in the spring, the greens were in decent shape.

Additional bonuses:
1. punch card for each bucket/round purchased and your 10th or 11th is free which you can use for the largest bucket which is like $15 and 150 balls, even if all you have purchased up to that point are the small buckets
2. you can BYOB...at least I haven't had a problem with it yet.

I've also been to Golden Bear and while nicer, with better grass/range, it is more crowded and the chipping areas are not free.

I would be interested to hear about Stevens Park range...

I don't remember Stevens Park having a range the last time I played there. I think they just have a putting green.

I wish we had more public ranges in East Dallas. Anybody know of anything in the Lake Highlands area besides Top Golf?

I'm starting lessons at Sherrill Park in Richardson in 2 weeks...

too bad it's not in a better location for me as large buckets are only $7.

I'll try out North Texas Golf Center. I looked into Golden Bear actually, as it is on the way home for me. Probably gonna check both of these out this week.

Golden Bear is solid. Tons of room and the grass is usually in good shape. Also, they have a good chipping area too, athough I think you have to sign up for one of their birdie level or higher prepaid range cards (appears to be $66 and you get $78 of value in balls) to use the chipping area for free, or you pay by the use for the chipping area. The putting green is in good shape and free.

I've been out to Golden Bear, for some reason I thought that was really out of the way for me. But then again there is a firehouse sub and krystal burger by it!

But I guess if your coming from Plano, Carrolton is on the way.

East Dallas Ag, I maybe wrong, but I thought you had to purchase the $10 bucket or play 9 holes to get a stamp on your card? I didn't think they would stamp your card when you purchase a small bucket.

Stevens park does not have a driving range; it has two putting greens. It is a really fun course to play though.

Cedar Crest hosted the 1927 PGA Championship.

Haven't played it in years, but the greens were usually hump-backed and hard to hit.

Andy - who are you taking lessons from at SP?
nguyenning
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I'm not sure who it is yet... I just know the rates and dates of the lessons. Reached out via email and was contacted by Jacob Horton.

Is there someone I should request (if that's even possible, as it is a group lesson...)

aggolfer
How long do you want to ignore this user?
If it is a group deal then there might be a couple of them out there. Never taken a lesson from Jacob but he is good people.
nguyenning
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Ah crap.... now I'm definitely getting Jacob. Should I ask who the teacher is for my certain date? Or would that be awkward if he says it's him and I suddenly decide not to do it... ha

This is beginners though, so I'm bound to learn something no matter what

Going to North Texas Golf Center today... gonna grab a medium bucket then play that 9 hole par 3.

Does this move pretty fast? I'd hate to wait that long on a par 3 course... but I've never been to one, so not sure.
East Dallas Ag
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I have never seen more than 3-4 groups on the course, it moves fast.

The U.S. Open was never held at Cedar Crest.... the only time the U.S. Open was held in Dallas was in the 1950's at Northwood Country Club.

I think I've played the par 3 course more than half a dozen times, all after work (7pm) and I don't think I've ever had a wait.

Maybe a waited about a minute or so at the longest.

It wasn't the US Open... it was the 1927 PGA Championship

Good to know... hoping a friday afternoon isn't packed :/
