  • There is no "s" in the middle of Braunfels. It is BRON-fuhls, not BRONZE-fels.

  • The road on the south end of town that intersect I-35 at Loop 337 is pronounced RICK-lee, not ROO-kuhl. My grandfather had a farm there, and mother lived on that road for 20 years.

I don't even live there, but this kind of stuff irritates me.

    Burdizzo,

I've often chuckled at your user name, wondering what % of posters that see it actually know what a Burdizzo is and how it's used.

For the record, we always used an Elastrator.

"There's only one S in New Braunfels...and there are two L's in Luling but only one in Del Rio."

Is the guy who is in the Chacon Suzuki commericals named "Rock Music"? It's been driving me crazy. That's the only thing I can hear.

I did not know that. I have lived here for 3+ years and always pronounced it Rue-kle. The spelling is Ruekle.

Burdizzo, I have never heard Rueckle road pronounced RICK-lee, not ROO-kuhl. I am not saying you are wrong but I have never heard it pronounced this way. When did this become the pronounciation??? I hate to say it but to me it is like when the austinites call Guadalupe Gualupe and Manchaca Manchack. I have lived in the NB area for 20 years and have never heard ROO-kuhl rd called Rick-lee.

Austinites used to call their airport Robert MYOO-ler airport for many years until they interviewed one of Robert Mueller's children on TV (Robert Mueller was long since dead). The reporter asked the person what he thought of his father's legacy, and he said he only wished people woud pronounce the name right "MILLER"

Almost overnight, people started calling it Robert MILL-er Airport.

My grandparents, aunts, and uncles lived on Ruekle Road in the 1940's until the 1990's before New Braunfels was overrun with tourists. They swear it is pronounced RICK-lee.

Since I am married to the above Texas pronunciation nazi, I have learned a lot about local pronunciation and I try my best...too bad when I pronounce things "correctly" now I am corrected by the names' owners who pronounce their own names "wrong."

I said Koenig (KAY-nig) and the girl pronounced her own last name KOE-nig--egg on my face!

I still say Co-mall and PEDernales. It's a hard habit to break not being from around here.

Texas is all messed up from being a combination of isolated Spanish, Czech, and German communities whose descendants have no formal schooling in their original tongue. The best thing to do is abandon all hope of pronouncing everything "correctly". Pronounce places and streets in whatever way indentifies the location most universally. ALWAYS ask people how they want their names pronounced, and then stick by that pronunciation.

I don't understand why folks here in Austin call the street "GWADaloop". I've never heard the river of the same name pronounced that way anywhere else in Texas, always "GWADaloopee" or "GWADaloopay".

I call BS on the Ruekle Road comment. I grew up there as well and nobody, including people who lived the 80+ years, said Rick-lee. If anything the old-timers pronounced it "wreckle" (rhymes with “freckle”, I suck at phonics).

    It's a German name.

    Just like Koehler (KAY-ler).

I went to Sangerhalle one time. I was embarrassed that a friend I was with kept calling it "Sanger-HOLLY" the whole time.

But then again he also washed his hands in a bidet once.

Old Austin Joke (typed phonetically for full effect) :

Hispanic kid tells his grandmother he's going out to run some errands and she asks where all he's going.

Kid: "Well, I'm going down to Guadaloop to pick up a textbook.

GM: "No! No!, Mijo! It's pronounced Wadaloopay!"

Kid: "O.k. O.k. Well, then I'm headed over to Manshack to have lunch with..."

GM: "No! No!, Mijo! It's pronounced Munshocka!"

Kid: "Then I'm heading back up to Seezer Chavez to interview for a job."

GM: "No! No!, Mijo! It's pronounced First Street!"

My grandparents held the celebration of their 50th Wedding Anniversary at the Sangerhalle in 1975. They had an oompa band, lots of dancing, and endless amounts of beer.

All of us boy cousins were dressed in matching denim leisure suits. The pictures are a hoot.
