Yea districts have waited until the day of before and it's backfired. LISD called one time at like 7 am the day of and a bunch of elementary kids and teachers were stuck at school. My wife couldn't even get out of our driveway.

Most of the time the schools would wait until the day before. Only thing I can come up with is they don't want people driving back home late Monday evening when it's supposed to be ugly.

I don't think RRISD is alone here. Seems like most of the area districts have cancelled at this point. I agree though, I don't think it's going to be bad

Here is KXAN latest prediction. Looks like up to 2 inches of snow tomorrow morning and maybe black ice tomorrow night. Seems pretty reasonable to call class off now so parents can plan.

It's not looking like much snow or ice will be coming.

But now the kids are off and parents have to work because the weather isn't that bad.

Both my VA clinic in Temple is open and my wife's clinic in Austin is open as of now.

Luckily I can work remote tomorrow but going to be hard with a 5 month old and 9 year old and 5 year old

I think it was the right decision, from looking at streets.

I drove in today and the black ice is yhe worst I have ever seen it. I did a full 360 on the tollwsy and I was being very cautious.

I think RRSID should have kept the schools open so I can work in peace. Stop thinking about the safety of the children and teachers and think about me.

I think the districts wrestle with when to cancel school. You are putting working parents in a tough spot no matter what you do. Would you rather know last minute? Or would you rather have a heads-up so you can have a chance to figure something out? I genuinely don't know the answer. Looks like canceling was the right move this time.

There was also a pretty gnarly bus accident that time up towards Round Rock/Leander because of the ice that time.

I think we just need to accept that the new norm is when there is significant ice & snow in the forecast that school will be called off early, even if it's not how they do it in the north or it ends up being somewhat of a bust. They probably could have gotten away with a two hour delay today in some area, but staff still starts moving around pretty early on those days.
