or is this another bait and switch deal...?
I like if enough people get behind it and do some planning (like legit park&ride that is safe) but doubt that Sixth Street can be rehabilitated without leadership willing to not just spend money but also kick butt to clean up the area.

I don't see it. If ask Brandon why he keeps the F16 forum is it helps keep the, ummm, passionate posters somewhat confined to there and not spread over the whole site.

The same could be said of 6th street. It keeps the rowdies in a known area. Families will never be there at night, especially weekends.

But let them give it a go.

agreed. i don't think you can make it family friendly. however, it is definitely in a spiral that needs fixing. a

KVUE came out with a similar report that listed some reactions and noted that the city has had an ongoing program for the area. Bar owners basically said we are already taxed too much and what really needs to happen is get more police.

I think the plan is to let it get bad enough that one developer can come in and buy it on the cheap then "save it"

I made my first trip to Nashville and hung out on Broadway a couple of nights in February. Wow, night and day vs 6th St. Reminded me of the 6th St of yesteryear. So it can be done. But yeah, you have to give all the rowdies somewhere else to go.

Once the local miscreants decide as a collective group that is where they want to gather, you can pretty much only wait until they move on by making the place too secure for them with a heavy police presence, or too boring for them by closing bars that stay open late into the night.

Help me, Tilman Fertitta. You're my only hope.

ETA: Here's the link to Community Impact's article, as mentioned in the OP's link.

Yeah you need to end the idea of Dirty 6th, it can be party but not dirty, needs to look more like West or East Sixth than Dirty

East 6th - East of 35
Dirty - 35 to Congress
West - Congress west through Tarrytown

NSFW:

Does it need saving? It is dead during the day but is packed at night/weekends still. I mean, it's a bar district. One that I typically try and avoid unless an out of towner really wants to visit or we end up at a comedy show at Comedy Mothership.

Edit: I take it back, it needs saving:

6th street doesn't need to be more "family friendly." It's not Bourban Street.

Broadway reminded you of old 6th street? It reminded me of Times Square.

6th st is beyond fixing up. The damage has been done.

Have you seen pictures of Times Square in the 70's?
All it takes is political will. Unfortunately Austin ain't got that right now. Someday...

LOL. Some of y'all think DT Austin is some apocalyptic hellhole…. A) it's better than it was 2 years ago B) austin is safer than Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Beaumont, Corpus Christi, Arlington and Lubbock…..

Update on safer sixth street -
city is going to allow tall bldgs on a portion of "Dirty6th".
Part of the denser is better program in my opinion,
especially if a favored developer wants it..

6th street at night is like a grand theft auto server. Forget family friendly, I would take generally acceptable in any understanding of western civilization. Its a degenerate hellscape. On any given evening youll be hard pressed not to see people having a fist fight in a pile of horse****, people sprinting away from the cops, people urinating in the street.

I was there for a concert at Stubbs Friday night and decided to walk around to check it out. It has probably been fifteen years since we did that. We lasted about ten minutes and will never do that again. It has changed.

I hope the school in austin is using that as a recruiting tool.
