Tallest bldg in Texas coming to Austin and total of tall bldgs downtown will pass Houston for most in state soon despite a downturn in rents. So says this Axios article.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure the city makes more off a condo packed with taxpayers compared to a suburb needing more streets, sewers, schools, police, etc, etc.

Austin made a successful push for downtown housing in the 90's and after. The big push was to get enough residents to justify a grocery store. Whole Foods eventually did that. Lots of incentives for years. And by many metrics it was successful.

And yes building up residential units is more efficient. They did the same thing around the sip campus.

Until you have to move into those units around the sip campus. Nightmare doesn't begin to describe move-in day at UT.

"Hey, let's have 50,000 people all move in on the same day, and have half the street closed down with construction, with two visitor parking spots available across all campus."

Yeah, like most people I formed my ideas about how things "ought" to be while growing up - which means it seems normal to me to have 5-6 million people in Texas instead of +30,000,000 counted and no telling how many uncounted.
Older, even more crowded cultures have lots of examples, like terraced farming, of what we can "look forward to".
I will say Austin deserves to have some pride for being such a desired location.

If I remember it was the SOS crowd that pushed urban density to mistakenly believe they they could prevent growth in the Barton Springs aquifer. Of course they wanted NO growth at all. That was silly and a nonstarter.

Son played baseball from 2005 - 2018. We watched the Austin downtown shoot up. The same thing happened to the boys and now they are all college graduates. I'm not sure which part is more alarming anymore.

when i first moved to Austin, I lived in the 360 Condos at 3rd and Nueces. was a great spot.

First few weeks after the Frost Bank Building was open the light was so bright it was quite a distraction on the upper deck of I35. Not sure if they turned it down or frosted the windows to reduce the intensity
