All sorts of wild conservative narratives are being pushed about this. I have seen people say rockets were fired even though it was bottle rockets…. I have seen people compare them to antifa, LOL. I have seen people say this proves how unsafe Austin is, despite no one being hurt, and despite Austin still being the safest large city in Texas…

At the end of the day it was just a bunch of numbnut car people being dumb

Proves two things

1) this was just a bunch of numbnuts
2) most you complain about austin don't know anything about austin

Be more specific.

I think my posts were clear

Ok. I will be more clear. The video you posted was a bunch of idiots, but on Twitter many people were using it as an example for why Austin sucks. That's dumb, it was a bunch of young numbnuts doing dumb crap, it wasn't a riot or political.

Do you live in Austin? If not I'd love to meet with you in Austin to drive around and discuss the issues in the community.

I live in Austin, and I didn't even know there was street racing chaos on Saturday night until today. I picked up my packet for the Austin Half Marathon at the Palmer Events early Saturday afternoon, and I stayed home the rest of the day. I ran the Austin Half Marathon in 1:47:34.1 yesterday morning.

It's really not worth engaging on this topic, especially if they have post over 12,000 times on the Politics board. You will get nowhere and eventual it will dissolve to into "SOROS!"

Some people don't like Austin. Most of them don't live here, because if they did they'd move. We are all better off to let them enjoy Kyle, Buda, Cedar Park, or Pflugerville where they feel safe and we can continue to enjoy Austin.

If we ignore, they usually go back to 16.

The police response to the incident was delayed due to, as usual, understaffing. A city council member (Atler) called the incident in to 911 and was on hold due to.... understaffing. The first police officer who arrived had to drive his car in reverse due the to crowd converging upon his car. Several people were set on fire, from the fireworks apparently. Police vehicles were damaged and at least one officer was injured.

I live here and pay taxes here and personally am getting sick of the mismanagement of our police and safety in general.

"The event has now sparked outrage from citizens, with local Council Member Alison Alter telling the Austin American-Statesman that she ended up on hold for 28 minutes after stumbling upon the takeover."

Listen, I am not defending and have not defended these street racers/ drifters/ whatever they are. I have called them dumb, numbnuts, etc. I have no problem with any who were arrested.

My point is that it wasn't a riot or a political act.

To the austin police… two years in a row their budget has been increased to higher levels than it ever has. I support that. I don't believe that anyone was on hold for 20 something minutes with a 911 call. I have called 911 twice in the last 6 months and never had a wait, at all. There are police in that area 24/7 anyway, especially at that time/ day of week. It didn't even need to be reported…. Austin Police have problems and many come from within their own department. They have the money they need, or are at least not far off. People act like they were defunded of all resources. 3 years ago they had 30 million dollars (out of over 400 million) that was taken from their budget which has since been given back plus a lot more.

Austin does have problems, I won't deny that, but for a city that has increased in population as quickly as it has we are doing pretty well.

What large city should we look at as an example to follow? Most hate on Austin is simply cause it's the cool thing to do despite it still being the safest large city in Texas.

I live in austin. I work in austin. My kid goes to AISD. I have never seen a violent crime. None of my neighbors, friends, family or co-workers have personally been the victim of violent crimes. People act like it's just some lawless free-for-all and it just isn't but I understand it is the political whipping boy for some.

I was with someone recently who called 9-1-1 and was on hold for more than 15 minutes. Based on what I've read elsewhere, this is not the exception, but the rule. Unacceptable.

Crime and shootings are on the rise.

And more drug addicts are setting up tents and camping around the city.

Austin is quickly becoming a ****hole. Amazing how fast the quality of life is deteriorating.

Paragraph 1… I just don't believe you. I have called twice in the last 6 months and were answered immediately. The 911 call centers have had some issues but it is exaggerated by people who don't like austin.

Paragraph 2… Crime is going up but it is still the safest large city in Texas. I linked that a few posts up

Paragraph 3… They have cleared out most of the encampments. There are not more. That is just wrong.

But what do you think is a step to be taken to get people off the street?

Paragraph 4…. Well, that's an opinion. So ok.

Even the Mayor is acknowledging the Call Center issue, but feel free to pretend that it doesn't exist.

This is the same Mayor that claimed he was going to return things to normalcy (other something similar, but has managed to screw up the Police negotiations within a few weeks on the job. He's got the anti-police crowd in his ear, and apparently he's afraid to cross them.

I also acknowledged the call center issue as well, go back and read it. But still 66% of calls are answered in 15 seconds. So very few are going to 15 minutes….

Goes along with my point on austin issues being exaggerated.

Not siding with anyone here, but maybe 911 calls are more instantly answered during "daylight" hours vs midnight hour?

BTW, I remember similar stories about this happeing a year or so ago in the Wells Branch area. Outrage, but nothing like this. I think people are burying their heads in the sand if they don't realize the significance of this happening in a higher end area that is frequented by tourist.

Want to be a numbnut, fine. But do it in the shadows, not in one of the most prominent areas of town. EVERYONE knows S Lamar and Barton Springs, and doesn't want it taken over. Wells Branch, well.....

The cohost of this large, coordinated event, the Lonestar Show, told FOX 7 the goal was to have fun. Hundreds of people came from all over the country to participate in this side show, or takeover. "We want to be known; we want to be documented. We want to be the next Fast and Furious," said Jose Gonzales, a South Austin resident who was at the street racing event.

Lewis Guapo, a videographer who said he just happened to stop by, said a lot of people were having fun, but some were also concerned. "It is dangerous, and it can be dangerous but like I said, intersection, big, a lot of open space, everybody's backed up, so it's not really dangerous. Once you start going in and doing things that you're not supposed to do, it is dangerous," Guapo said.

"We didn't have no intentions of hurting nobody. You know, that's our fault. We're sorry to the police officer that got hurt, but man, he should have stayed in his own lane," Gonzales said.

The cohost of the event said they don't condone putting hands on cop cars or setting off fireworks. He told FOX 7 as taxpayers, they pay for the roads too, and this is how they choose to use them.

When asked if Gonzales was ever concerned about getting in trouble or even arrested, he said, "They can't catch us." Austin PD said, "Lawbreaking in this manner will result in enforcement and arrest."

The Austin Police Department seized meth, marijuana, and multiple guns during six arrests related to the downtown street takeover on Saturday night, APD Chief Joseph Chacon announced Tuesday.

Two people were taken into custody Saturday for evading arrest and officers arrested four others on Sunday while investigating the takeover, in which car clubs blocked off intersections, drifted in the middle of the street, and set off fireworks.
